Please tell us something about your area of research?

My main area of research is cultural production from Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Specifically I focus on how cultural products (eg: literature, film, (underground) music, queer cultural production, etc) can perform as archives of counter-memories vis-a-vis dominant (state) discourses on culture. I have also begun to explore related issues intra-regionally, comparing for instance the lingering colonial (counter)memories in Taiwan and Korea.

What do you think about the academic and research environment at SKKU?

I have only been here for about 1year, but in that time I have felt the atmosphere to be very conducive and supportive of research. There are numerous incentives offered by the university, and I have received much encouragement from my peers. All in all, it has been a fruitful 1 year and I am looking forward to future productivity.

How did you decide to teach and research at SKKU?

I have been living in Korea for some time because of personal reasons, and the reputation of SKKU is well-known. Once a position in my field presented itself, I jumped at the opportunity. As I am a recent PhD graduate (2010), I appreciate the chance that SKKU has given me.

What would you advise other foreign professors who are considering taking up a position at SKKU?

If you have interest in exploring a different culture and different teaching experience, then SKKU certainly provides numerous benefits and advantages. The university is doing much to internationalize itself and it is a very exciting time to be a part of the process.

Finally, do you have any good advice for SKKU's students?

University is a time for you to challenge yourself, to push beyond your limits and acquire not only academic knowledge for your future careers, but also life knowledge that will help you in the years to come. So the most important thing is: enjoy yourself, these days will never come again.
