Composite Materials Simultaneous Structure Industrial Technology base center holds a meeting with Chiang Mai University in Thailand to strengthen cooperation.

On February 13, SKKU’s Composite Materials Simultaneous Structure Industrial Technology base center (Director Jonghwan Suhr), Chiang Mai University (CMU) in Thailand, and President PONGRUK SRIBANDITMONGKOL held a meeting at Chiang Mai University to strengthen global industry-academic cooperation and co-research and develop composite material technology.

Sungkyunkwan University's Composite Materials Simultaneous Structure Industrial Technology base center is a pilot project to foster the Industrial Technology Base Center in 2020 organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. This project aims to establish an R&D support and supply base system (first stage) so that university research institutes can continuously develop and accumulate early technologies through R&D and supply and provide them to the companies (second stage).

Our university was selected as the first subject for this project under the theme of "Simultaneous Design of Composite Materials" and received state funding for two and a half years in the first stage (2020-2022) and will establish a supply base system with state funding for three years in the second stage (2023-2025).

In order to strengthen international industry-academic cooperation with Sungkyunkwan University's Composite Materials Simultaneous Structure Industrial Technology base center, Chiang Mai University, and the Science Park, Dr. Tony Kim (to be appointed as an industry-academic cooperation professor at the composite materials simultaneous industrial technology base center) was signed at Chiang Mai University. Based on his 38 years of R&D experience at the U.S. Air Force Research Institute and global network, Dr. Tony Kim will work to strengthen international industry-academic cooperation between the Center for Simultaneous Design of Composite Materials and Chiang Mai University. In addition, the participating faculty members (Professor Sungmin Kim of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Dukhyun Choi, Professor Hyungmo Jeong, and Professor Jaedo Nam of Chemical/Polymer Engineering) provided technical advice and exchanges related to eco-friendly future mobility materials for startups located in Chiang Mai University Science Park.

In addition to the agreement on strengthening international industry-academic cooperation, the two organizations agreed to cooperate for joint research and development of composite material technology and to conduct education and exchange programs to foster professionals through international joint research through composite material application and convergence research. Chiang Mai University, particularly, has excellent eco-friendly material extraction skills and technology using abundant natural plant resources, so it is expected to produce a high synergic effect with the composite materials technology accumulated at SKKU's Composite Materials Simultaneous Structure Industrial Technology base center.

Prof. Jonghwan Suhr said, "We will share the capabilities of Composite Materials Simultaneous Structure Industrial Technology base center and Chiang Mai University's know-how in eco-friendly materials research and technology development and set up the foundation for future innovative development in the composite materials field."
