Prof. Kyung-sung Lee (Theatre) is directing a new performance titled “Dancing with P,” which will be staged at the LG Art Center

Professor Kyung-sung Lee (Theatre) is directing a new performance titled Dancing with P, which will be staged at the LG Art Center. The show, co-produced by LG Art Center and Creative VaQi, will run from September 28 to October 6 at the LG Art Center Seoul, U+ Stage, located in Gangseo-gu, Seoul.

Professor Lee has been exploring how the works of Pina Bausch have been passed on to a new generation of dancers and what significance these pieces hold for contemporary audiences. To this end, he visited Wuppertal in 2021 and 2024, where he conducted research and interviews with members of the Tanztheater Wuppertal. In July, he also invited Korean dancer Kim Na-young and American dancer Eddie Martinez, both long-time members of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, to Seoul for a two-week workshop on the company’s unique working methods.

The narrative of Dancing with P blends fact and fiction, offering audiences a reimagined look at both the past and present of Tanztheater Wuppertal, as well as Bausch’s creative processes. Through this work, contemporary Korean artists are invited to explore the world they currently inhabit. Professor Lee stated, “Through Pina Bausch, I want to question what ‘tradition’ means to humanity, and how it can remain relevant and in dialogue with the present, rather than being a relic of the past.”

The performance is supported by the LG Art Center’s Creator’s Box, the Goethe-Institut, the Arts Council Korea, and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.
