On Friday, September 27, Sungkyunkwan University's Office of International Affairs hosted the "2024 Sungkyun Hangul Writing Contest" for university students at the Business Building on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus.
Starting this year, regional preliminaries were eliminated, and the contest focused solely on the finals. Eligibility was expanded to include not only university students but also anyone with at least a university enrollment status, both domestic and international, allowing Korean language enthusiasts from all walks of life to participate. The contest was held offline in Korea and online for international participants. This year’s topic was "Companionship," and participants were tasked with writing an essay of 1,200 characters or more on the subject within 90 minutes.
For international participants, the contest was simultaneously conducted via the Zoom video conferencing platform, with strict verification procedures in place to confirm participants' handwriting. Additionally, AI detection programs and plagiarism check services were used to ensure fairness.
The top three winners (1st: Jangwon, 2nd: Ahwon, 3rd: Tamhwa) will receive benefits such as full tuition waivers for four semesters if they pursue graduate studies at Sungkyunkwan University. They will also be eligible for tuition reductions for courses at the Sungkyun Language Institute and short-term programs.
Hanjung Lee, Director of the Office of International Affairs, stated, “We hope to see many original and moving works in this year’s contest.”
Meanwhile, the university has been hosting the Hangul Writing Contest since 2007, playing a leading role in the globalization of the Korean language and Hangul for 17 years.
