Academy of East Asian Studies Hosts 5th Korean Speech Contest for International Students

Academy of East Asian Studies (Director: Kim Kyung-ho) recently hosted its 5th Korean Speech Contest.
Amid the growing global demand for Korean Studies, this contest was organized to enhance the Korean language proficiency of international students. The theme for this year was "I, You, Us, and K-Culture." A total of 17 academic departments participated in the event, which was conducted in a hybrid format combining online and offline sessions: Preliminary Round (Online): November 16 – December 3, Final Round (Offline): December 23
Sixteen finalists from China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Tajikistan competed in the final round, delivering passionate 5-minute speeches. The grand prize was awarded to Jinmyung Lee, a student from China (Class of 2022, Media & Communication major, with a Korean Studies minor).
All finalists will receive scholarships totaling approximately KRW 3 million. Additionally, winners of the Grand Prize, Excellence Prize, and Merit Prize will be granted tuition reductions ranging from 10% to 30%.
One participant shared their experience, saying, "Preparing for the Korean Speech Contest boosted my confidence in speaking Korean, and listening to other participants’ presentations sparked my interest in Korean Studies."
Director Kim Kyung-ho of the Academy of East Asian Studies remarked, "This contest reflects the university's strong interest in and support for international students. I was amazed by the exceptional skills of the participants and look forward to the next contest."
Since 2020, the university has been hosting this Korean Speech Contest for all international students, including those taking Korean Studies courses. It has become a signature event showcasing the outstanding Korean language proficiency of international students.
