Professor Sungmin Yoon Inducted into the University of Pennsylvania Hall of Fame

Professor Sungmin Yoon from the Department of Social Welfare has been selected as an inductee into the Hall of Fame at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy & Practice. The induction ceremony will take place on May 16 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA.

Professor Yoon earned a bachelor's degree in social welfare from Yonsei University before continuing studies abroad. He obtained a Bachelor of Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York, a Master's in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy from Oxford University, and a Doctorate in Clinical Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania.

Before joining the Department of Social Welfare at our university in 2024 as an assistant professor, Professor Yoon taught at Alliance University and New York University.

With over 20 years of experience in the field of mental health social work, Professor Yoon served as a Vice President at The Child Center of NY and continues to advise as a Drug Policy Commissioner, appointed by the Mayor of New York City. Drawing from his extensive experience in mental health social work and counseling, he co-authored Understanding Korean Americans’ Mental Health, addressing the mental health challenges faced by Korean Americans. Additionally, his upcoming book, Social Work Practice, Research, Engagement, and Education for Koreans in the United States, is set to be published this year by Bloomsbury Publishing, UK.

Founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin, the University of Pennsylvania is a prestigious Ivy League institution. Its School of Social Policy & Practice annually honors distinguished alumni who have made outstanding contributions to research, education, and social work practice through its Hall of Fame induction.
