Sungkyunkwan University successfully hosted the 3rd Autonomous Driving Competition on Friday, July 18, at the Semiconductor Building on the Natural Sciences Campus.

The competition was organized to nurture key talent in the future mobility sector and was divided into two categories: the AI Chip Autonomous Driving category and the Software Autonomous Driving category. Notably, the AI Chip Autonomous Driving Competition was the first of its kind in the world, showcasing SKKU’s technological leadership as well as its educational value.

Participants mounted cameras, LiDAR, and ultrasonic sensors onto child-sized electric cars (1/5 scale of an actual vehicle) and directly designed and implemented AI-based autonomous driving systems. The competition included both track-completion races and mission-based challenges. The AI Chip category featured a vertical parking mission, while the Software category included tasks such as dynamic obstacle avoidance, pedestrian crossing and traffic light recognition, and vertical parking.

In the final results, the AI Chip Grand Prize went to Team Autonova (students Minseo Jang, Siwon Moon, Jaehun Choi, Hyunho Seo from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Chaerin Song from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering). The Software Grand Prize was awarded to Team DriveOn (students Youngjoo Kim, Jaemin Yoon, Inhoo Hwang, Taeyoung Jung, and Minjun Bae from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering). Other outstanding teams also received Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Encouragement Awards.
