Sungkyun Institute of China Studies Hosts Roundtable on “The Future of Chinese Studies in Korea: Building an Inter-University Collaboration System”

The Sungkyun Institute of China Studies at Sungkyunkwan University (Director: Professor Jonghyuk Lee) held a roundtable discussion titled “The Future of Chinese Studies in Korea: Building an Inter-University Collaboration System” on Friday, October 31, at Hoam Hall, Room 50106.
The event began under the moderation of Honorary Director Hee-Ok Lee, followed by an opening keynote presentation by Director Jonghyuk Lee. In his address, Professor Lee introduced the institute’s future strategic agenda, including the China Future Strategy Industry Seminar—which integrates engineering and Chinese studies—and in-depth research on Korea-China public diplomacy based on big data. He also proposed four key directions for advancing Chinese studies in Korea: joint nurturing, joint publications, joint projects, and joint networks.

Following the keynote, directors from major Chinese research institutes at leading Korean universities—Kangwon Lee (Director, Institute of Chinese Studies, Seoul National University), Jungnam Lee (Head, Center for Chinese Studies, Asiatic Research Institute, Korea University), and Seokhee Han (Deputy Director, Institute of Chinese Studies, Yonsei University)—engaged in an in-depth discussion on the challenges facing Chinese studies in Korea and the establishment of a sustainable inter-university cooperation platform.
Concluding the roundtable, Director Jonghyuk Lee remarked, “Although the environment for Chinese studies in Korea is becoming increasingly difficult, research on China remains vital for the country’s future. The Sungkyun Institute of China Studies will continue to pursue substantial, forward-looking research and academic collaboration.”
