College of Information and Communication Engineering held an opening ceremony of IoT Semiconductor Research Center that would lead the project to nurture professionals on October 7 (Wed). The purpose of this project is to train advanced design professional for system semiconductors that combine expertise and creativity by developing and operating convergence education programs for master’s and Ph.D. students.

It will be conducted as a consortium (IoT Semiconductor Research Center, ISRC, Director: Prof. Kangyoon Lee of College of Information and Communication Engineering) and will focus on PBL education in seven areas that are subdivided into functional units such as sensors/signal processing, memory, security, and system applications.

A total of 140 people, including 100 masters and 40 PhDs, will be produced over six years (4+2 years), and 1.6 billion won will be provided annually with a total of 9.6 billion won in government budget. Based on 4th and 6th semesters of mater’s and Ph.D., the company will develop and operate customized courses and courses for each specialized field divided into semiconductor foundations, semiconductor deepening, convergence, and project based learning (PBL). It also actively operates student support programs such as education, career counselling, and entrepreneurship mentors.

The consortium composed of 5 universities (Sungkyunkwan University, Hangyang University, Kyunghee University, Inha University, Chungbuk University), 28 corporations (Samgsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Silicon Works, and etc.) and 7 research institutes (Korean Advance NanoFab Center, SeongNam Industry Promotion Agency, Korea Electronics Technology Institute and etc.).

The director, Prof. Kangyoon Lee, said “System semiconductors will determine the competitiveness of high-end personnel who will meet the needs of many kinds of customized products and set companies, and we will do our best to systematically train core talents with creative problem-solving skills.”

The dean, Joonho Lee, said “We are very happy that our university will take the lead in fostering the core of the fourth industry, IoT system semiconductor workforce through the collaboration of industry-university. And we will fully support the center at the university level.”

Ministry of Science and ICT selected and 3 consortium, Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul National University, and Pohang University of Science and Technology, as the institution to nurture professionals of system semiconductor and will support them.
