Professor Yoo-Sung Kim’s Research Lab Received Best Excellence Award in Spectrum Challenge

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) held a ‘Phase 2 Spectrum Challenge’ to select excellent radio wave use technology for Korean universities and research teams of small and medium-sized enterprises. In this challenge, the Computer Systems and Intelligence Lab (CSI Lab) led by Prof Yoo-Sung Kim, College of Computing, won the best excellence award (1st).

The theme of this year’s challenge was the resolution of radio interference between the next-generation Wi-Fi NR-U (New Radio Unlicensed) and microwave.

Following the existing 5GHz band, the 6GHz band will be expanded and supplied for new non-licensed purposes, and industries are interested in technologies that selectively and efficiently use frequencies such as next-generation Wi-Fi, 5G NR-U technology, and micro-wave for broadcasting, transmission, and telecommunication. The goal of ETRI is to support the best teams in the challenge contest to develop core technologies through joint research with domestic research institutes.

The award-winning team will receive 100 million won of research funds and will be given the opportunity to participate in next year’s Phase 3 Spectrum Challenge Finals.
