Prof. Kim Tae Il (Department of Chemical Engineering) Receive The 25th Songgok Science and Technology Award

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) awarded Prof. Kim Tae Il (Department of Chemical Engineering) at SKKU, as the recipient of The 25th Songgok Science and Technology Award on the 8th.

The Songgok Science and Technology Award was established in 1999 to commemorate the achievements of Dr. Hyung Sup Choi of Sonngak, the founding President of KIST and the Minister of Korea’s Science and Technology Ministry.

This award is granted to researchers with outstanding achievements in advanced materials development of global excellence or to promising science researchers who contribute to the economical and industrial development of science and technology in Korea through academic research on science and technology policies.

Professor Kim Tae Il is a leading bio-electronic device expert in Korea. His recent publication introduces a new concept of an “Ultrasensitive mechanical crack-based sensor inspired by the spider sensory systems.” He is particularly recognized for his contribution of a cuticular pad that can remove noise around the spider's vibrating sensory organs and only transmit the necessary signals. Not only that, he contributed to the research on the necessary structure needed for sensor optimization to reveal the spider’s vibration sensor simulation and sensor mechanism. Through this, he has contributed greatly to the research of bio-inspired electronics and wearable medical devices for the next generation.

Professor Kim said in his acceptance speech, "Even the smallest insect has a function that humans cannot imagine," adding, "a material which imitates the vibration absorption ability of insects can eliminate various vibrations such as noise between floors, vehicle vibration and other daily sounds in real life.” After, he said, "he will actively conduct research on bio-inspired electronics through the use of advanced materials in the future.”

The Songgok Science and Technology Award ceremony will be held on the 10th at the KIST headquarters for its 57th Opening Ceremony in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. Professor Kim will be awarded a prize of twenty million Korean won.
