The National Research Foundation of Korea announced on the 16th that Prof. Changwoo LEE (SKKU) and Hyesung CHO (Ajou University)’s research team discovered control system that recognize and repair the gene inside human body.
When the DNA is damaged due to an internal issue, a system activates within the body to recognize and repair the gene.This is very important to control and suppress diseases such as cancer.
The 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three researchers who studied “mechanistic studies of DNA repair”. It shows that this research topic is under the spotlight in the academic world.
The research team was able to prove the effect of ‘Pellino1’ protein in accelerating the restoration of the DNA. Prof. LEE said, “With this discovery, we are now able to understand the cause of many illnesses (genetic disorder, immune disorder, cancer, metabolic disease, etc.,) in a new perspective. This will be the foundation to develop medicines of these illnesses.”
