1. Theme: "Fostering Climate Literacy in the Humanities Classroom"
- This talk explores how the humanities can be pressed into service to address the climate emergency, the greatest ethical challenge facing industrial civilization. Drawing on Bryan Alexander’s Universities on Fire, it speculates what the future of education might look like in a rapidly heating world. It discusses some strategies for introducing climate history into Shakespeare studies and early modern studies, and how studying cultural responses to the Little Ice Age might promote ecological resilience in the twenty-first century.
