The School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (AMSE) at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) boasts 28 distinguished faculty members who have published more than 200 Science Citation Indexed (SCI) papers per year. The AMSE has been consistently ranked first in Korea.
In 2005, the department's name changed to AMSE, reflecting the merger of the Metals and Materials Departments. More than 600 students are currently enrolled in the AMSE undergradu-ate program and over 200 graduate students are exploring the fundamentals and applications of materials for a wide range of advanced technologies. Some of the most active research areas include energy materials, nanomaterials, biomaterials, and smart materials.
In 2007, to reinforce engineering education, the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) started accrediting the program. The AMSE is acknowledged as the best department in terms of the total grants received from the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) and World Class University (WCU) projects which are endowed by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The AMSE also leads several national projects at the Engineering Research Center (ERC), National Core Research Center (NCRC), National Research Laboratory (NRL) and Regional Innovation Center (RIC).
