2016 Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize for AMOLED

Prof. Ho Kyoon Chung of the SKKU Advanced Institute of Nanotechnology (SAINT), received the 2016 Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize, an award presented by the Society for Information Display (SID) which is the highest authority in the field. Prof. Ho Kyoon Chung was selected for his contributions to the large-scale commercialization and technical development of AMOLED Displays.

The Society for Information Display is the sole international authority on display technology. It is comprised of more than 6,000 experts including top scientists, engineers, corporate researchers, and businesspeople in the display industry.

The Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize was established in 1987 to honor the Nobel laureate Dr. Braun who contributed significantly to the development of radio and television technology and has been regarded as the most significant prize that the Society for Information Display awards to individuals who have made outstanding technical achievements in or contributions to display technology. The award is made by the Board of Directors acting through a recommendation by the Honors and Awards Committee and includes a monetary prize of US $2,000.

Prof. Ho Kyoon Chung lead AMOLED technical development as an executive vice president of Samsung SDI's AMOLED Research Center from 2000 to 2008 and was a technical adviser of Samsung Mobile Display between 2009 and 2010. He received the Samsung award of honor in 2002, Order of Science and Technological Merit in 2006, and Order of Industrial Service Merit Silver Tower in 2011 for his service to the industry.

After his resignation from Samsung, he has conducted research to develop flexible AMOLED technical innovation in production as professor at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and dedicated himself to training skilled professionals. He also further developed AMOLED technology as the head of the Advanced AMOLED Technology Center at SKKU Information Technology Research Center (ITRC) supported by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.

The award will be presented during the SID Award Banquet on May 23, 2016 in San Francisco.
