Students from SKKU Receive 2nd Prize at BIOMOD Competition

TEAM SKKU led by Prof. Seung Woo LEE (SAINT) with student members; Jae Won LEE (School of Chemical Engineering,'13), Yong Duk CHO (Dept. of Chemistry,'11), Jong Won LIM (School of Chemical Engineering,'12), and Kwang Jin KIM (Dept. of Electronic and Electrical Engineering) received the 2nd prize among 40 international teams at the 2016 BIOMOD Competition.

BIOMOD is an annual biomolecular design competition for undergraduate students where teams compete to build new materials/designs such as autonomous robots, molecular computers, and prototypes for nanoscale therapeutics using the molecules of life (DNA, RNA, proteins, etc.). This competition was sponsored by the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering of Harvard University and held at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

TEAM SKKU demonstrated nanoscale structure using self-assembled DNA, and through this, they induced non-natural optical characters by assembling gold nanoparticles. This study is considered very meaningful as it suggests the possibility of new applications of self-assembled DNA besides the Drug Delivery System or Molecular Computing, which were dealt with many times before in previous competitions.

Right now the 2017 BIOMOD Competition is recruiting applicants and some students who participated in this year's competition plan to join the 2017 BIOMOD Competition again as mentors.

The participation of SKKU students in this competition was supported by SKKU Global Humanity Convergence and SKKU Advanced Institute of Nanotechnology (SAINT).
