SUNGKYUNKWAN UNIVERSITY (SKKU), SEOUL, KOREA

This year, 29 Korean universities were listed in the 2019 THE World University Rankings and 5 were ranked in the top 200 universities in the world.

Sungkyunkwan University, which can be called a "rising star" with this year's ranking, showed an impressive rise of 29 steps from 111^th place last year. Sungkyunkwan University not only joined the top 100 ranked universities for the first time, but also placed 2^nd in Korea.

SKKU has achieved remarkable results and international recognition after concentrating on improving several of its key aspects. "Sungkyunkwan University has been focused on the development of research and academics by being one of the first institutions to implement the convergence of various studies in accordance with the 4^th Industrial Revolution and by introducing a world-class education system by recruiting famous scholars as professors," said SKKU President Kyu Sang CHUNG, "We will continue to support and invest in being a world-class university in the future."

Sungkyunkwan University creates synergy by inviting many top-level researchers to work together and providing an environment where they can be the most productive. SKKU's production of international SCI papers has increased dramatically from 2,782 in 2010 to 4841 in 2016, placing it within the top 100 in the world. The amount of research funding also rose from 201.9 billion KRW in 2010 to 350.1 billion KRW in 2017. In particular, last year the index of international papers citing SKKU professors was 2.26, which is one of the highest in the world.
