"A Human being is not a being that has a fixed self, but a being made by practices and external stimuli. So, it is important to break down habits and patterns with small changes."
Michael Puett, a professor at Harvard University's Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, gave a special lecture entitled "What is a Good Life?" on November 23rd at SKKU. Prof. Puett was chosen one of Harvard's best professors in 2013. He was also a speaker at Harvard Think Big 4.
Generally, the modern attitude focused on the concepts of self, free will, and independence was criticized by Prof. Puett. "It is an illusion that we make a choice by ourselves and our subject. You can believe you bought a watch with your own decision, but it was decided by an online ad thoroughly calculated and placed according to your personal information collected by Google," said Prof. Puett. He explained that human beings live along a simple pattern, and even search engines like Google can identify that pattern. In terms of this perspective, it may not be true that there is a "True Self" and we have to struggle to find it. Also, he said, "We can make the world a better place by questioning common sense and traditions which were taken for granted."
