On May 9th, President Dong Ryeol SHIN and SKKU Vice-Presidents visited Tsinghua University in Beijing, China to have a discussion with Vice-President XUE Qikun. This is a second visit after the former president Kyu Sang CHUNG's visit in June of 2016.
The two universities have been interacting since 2006 when a faculty-level exchange agreement with the College of Information and Communication Engineering was established. It has since been expanded to other colleges, such as the Humanities, Business, Confucian Studies, Library, etc. SKKU also established an MOU for a joint project to build a "smart city" in December of 2015.
In this meeting, the two universities discussed opportunities for student exchange and interaction in the area of AI. Tsinghua University established the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in June of 2018 and seeks to partner with SKKU, which has been selected by the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT as one of three candidates (SKKU, KAIST, Korea University) to set up an AI Graduate school. Furthermore, SKKU has invited students from Tsinghua University to join a Nation-wide walking event and the International Summer School program.
Tsinghua University is ranked No.1 in China and 17th in the 2019 QS World Ranking. It is a prestigious university that has produced a Nobel laureate in physics and chairmen of the CCP (Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping). The university has made great achievements in the field of science and has a pivotal role in training science & technology talents under the auspices of the Chinese government.
On May 10th, President Shin also visited the Central Party School to join a seminar with Vice-Chief and Vice-President of the school to discuss academic exchange between the two institutions.
Sungkyun Institute of China Studies made an agreement with the Central Party School in March of 2013 and has held meetings regularly. A university-wide agreement was made in July of 2018.
Dean Junggeun SHIN (College of Confucian Studies) gave two presentations on "Comparing Korean and Chinese Confucianism: Defining 21st Century Confucianism" and "Situation in East Asia: Changing China-US Relationship and Development Plan for Korea-China Relationship".
President Shin said, "We wish to continue exchange with China's elite institution for mutual advancement."
