SKKU held the "2019 National Autonomous Car Designing Competition" from August 20th to 23rd. The event was sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Korea Sanhak Foundation. The participants included 120 students split into 40 different teams from 14 universities.
The competition was prepared to create an opportunity to develop future talents in the field of autonomous cars. Students practiced car modeling and coding for 4 days and worked together to design and build autonomous cars.
On the first day of the event, students were taught skills relevant to autonomous cars such as Arduino, 3D printing, and 3D modeling so that all the teams could begin at the same time.
On the second day, Prof. Sungho HWANG gave a special lecture on the "Key Technology of Autonomous Cars" and SKKU's team "SAVE", which won the minister's award in the previous competition, held a discussion for students.
Teams gathered at the "Learning Factory" on the third day to develop their autonomous cars and test the final products.
The main competition was held on the last day. The competition began with the normal racing course and each team presented the concept and ideas of their autonomous cars. They were also evaluated on the quality of the software they used for the autonomous cars. In the afternoon, each team raced in the intensive course tracks and SKKU's team took first place.
Prof. Sungho HWANG said, "I hope students learned to cooperate and experience designing using convergent skills. This competition was a good opportunity for students to experience designing mainly through software skills. I expect the students to become creative talents in the era of the fourth industrial revolution."
