■Place: room 83188
■Subject: Measurement Science Challenges for Nanocarbon Based Electronics
■Abstract : Nanocarbon materials, such as single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and graphene, have shown tremendous promise for a wide range of electrotechnical applications. The emergence of these materials from the lab into industrial scale production has highlighted the need for standard protocols and methods for assessing material quality in order to facilitate application development. NRC’s project in Nanocarbon Metrology is addressing some of the key measurement science challenges for solution processable forms of these materials which are of interest for applications in printable electronics, batteries, sensors and conductive composites. Some results from this project will be discussed including; 1) Approaches to assessing purity and chirality distributions in highly enriched semiconducting SWCNT samples, 2) Measurement protocols for assessment of solution processable graphene and graphene oxide, 3) Atomic scale imaging of SWCNT networks and graphene films, correlating film morphology and structure with electrical transport properties.
■GREGORY LOPINSKI is a Senior Research Officer in the Nanoscale Measurements team in the Metrology Research Center, National Research Council (NRC) Canada in Ottawa. After undergraduate studies in Engineering Physics at the University of Toronto, he pursued graduate studies in the United States, obtaining a PhD in Physics from Brown University in 1993. Following a postdoctoral position at Penn State University he returned to Canada, taking a position at NRC. At NRC he used scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the interaction of organic molecules with silicon surfaces, developed methods for controlled chemical modification of silicon and demonstrated the use of functionalized semiconductor surfaces and devices for chemical and biological sensing applications. His current research activities include characterization of solution processable nanocarbon materials and development of printable transistors based on carbon nanotubes. He also participates actively in development of nanomaterial standards as the IEC TC 113 Conver for Joint Working Group 1 of IEC TC 113 and ISO TC 229.
