2. 특강 주제 및 내용: Human-centered Computer Vision
Abstract:
Computer vision is in a golden age, having evolved from a small, niche corner of computer science into one of the highest-impact disciplines in all of science. But along with that success has come challenges: enormous computational demands, widening resource gaps between industry and academia, growing pains in peer review and conferences, and real-world ethical and societal challenges. In this talk, I'll first reflect on the current state of computer vision and the computer vision research community. Despite the fact that vision is an inherently subjective and human-centric experience, computer vision researchers typically think of their work as trying to build algorithms that objectively characterize the visual world. I'll argue for the importance of more human-centered approaches to computer vision research. I'll discuss some recent projects that work towards this goal, for example by using principles from developmental psychology to improve computer vision, and by adopting more qualitative, human-centric approaches to algorithm evaluation. Finally, I’ll argue that embracing the human side of perception can make computer vision both more robust and more responsible, and give us a clearer picture of how to advance both the field and ourselves as researchers.
Bio:
David Crandall is Luddy Professor of Computer Science at Indiana University Bloomington, where he also directs the Luddy Artificial Intelligence Center. He obtained the Ph.D. from Cornell University and B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Pennsylvania State University, and was a Senior Research Scientist at Eastman Kodak Company. He has published over 200 technical articles in top international venues, has received best paper awards or nominations in CVPR, WWW, CHI, ICCV, ICCBR, and ICDL, and has received about $25 million in research funding from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, Meta, Google, IN3, ETRI, and AnalytixIN. He was Co-Program Chair of the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2024, IEEE International Conference on Development and Learning (ICDL) 2024, and Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision (WACV) 2023, is Associate Program Chair of AAAI 2026, and is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He has received an NSF CAREER award (2013), two Google Faculty Research awards (2014 and 2020), an IU Trustees Teaching Award (2017), a Grant Thornton Fellowship (2019), a Luddy Professorship (2021), Distinguished Membership in the ACM (2023), and the Tracy M. Sonneborn Award (2024).
