Sungkyunkwan University's (SKKU) characteristic Samsung Library, located at its Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon, hosted two unique events during the Fall Semester of 2012: students made Book Trees and held a Reading Healing Camp.
The two unique trees in the lobby of the Samsung Library were made of 400 used books, and reached a height of almost 3 meters. 15 students worked 2 days to complete the project. Shaped like Christmas trees, the book trees not only added to the end-of-year holiday spirit, but were also part of a charity drive to provide books to Korean language departments at foreign university libraries and to community libraries within Korea. So far, 35,000 used books were collected and delivered to start a new life at those libraries.
The library's Reading Healing Camp was held on October 11th and 12th and combined the concepts of reading and camping. By spending the night together in the library, students had an opportunity to share their love of reading and build stronger social bonds. Three guest lecturers also contributed, inspiring students to share their concerns and thoughts about the values in their lives. In total, there were 100 participants who shared 20 tents put up inside the library.
