<강좌소개>

The purpose of this course will be to improve students’ English academic reading and writing skills through discussions of important topics and texts in the field of modern Korean studies. The topics, listed below, are arranged according to historical period, but the lectures, discussions, and readings will be interdisciplinary in scope, considering literature, sociology, anthropology, and political science. In addition, although the topics below are heavily biased towards twentieth century history, we will remain in conversation with the traditions and legacies of earlier dynasties and periods.

Each class, students will be assigned several short passages from important articles and books along with a short essay question to consider. Classes will begin with short presentations of assigned material by designated students followed by a lecture on the topic or theme of the day by the instructor. The remainder of each class will be used for seminar-style discussion and, depending on the English level of the students, formal writing instruction and feedback.

이 수업은 한국학의 주요 내용과 담론을 다루며, 성균관대 한국학 전공 학생들의 학술영어 읽기와 영어논문 쓰기 능력을 향상시키고자 하는 목적으로 만들어졌다. 각 회차별로 다룰 주제들은 연대순으로 정리되어 있다. 수업은 제공된 영어 아티클을 미리 읽어온 뒤, 각 주제에 대해 대화를 나누는 방식으로 진행될 예정이다. 역사뿐만 아니라 문학, 사회학, 인류학, 정치학 등 학제간의 입장을 모두 반영하는 수업이 될 것이다. 

각 수업에서는 학생들이 한국학과 관련된 책의 구절이나 영어 논문을 읽으며 수업 주제와 관련된 영어 논문 쓰기 훈련을 수행한다. 매 수업마다 학생들은 배정된 글에 대한 의견을 발표를 하고, 그 후에 강사가 강의를 할 예정이다. 수업의 후반에는 강사는 학생들과 함께 특정 주제에 대해 세미나를 개최하거나 역사적 문제에 대해 토론할 수 있다. 또한 학생들이 제출한 과제에 대한 피드백과 수정이 필요한 부분의 지적을 통해 영어 논문 쓰기 방법을 가르칠 것이다.

* 성균관대 학생뿐만 아니라 한국학으로 영어논문쓰기, 영어 프리젠테이션 능력을 향상시키길 원하는 사람 누구나 신청할 수 있다. 수강료는 무료이다.
