푹푹찌는 한여름에도 연구에 매진하는 사람들이 있다. 그들은 날씨와 상관없이 오늘도 현미경을 보고 가설을 세우고 고민에 빠져있을 것만 같다. 이번 달 커버스토리에서는 우리 학교 자연과학캠퍼스 연구실에서 활약하고 있는 12명의 연구자를 소개한다. 지면 사정상 6명씩 나누어 1, 2편으로 싣기로 했다. 12명에게 똑같은 질문을 주고 다른 답변을 받았다. 그들의 성균관대 연구실 생활은 어떤지 들어보자.

성균관대에서의 생활
우리 연구소(CINAP)는 넓은 연구실과 사무실, 다양한 과학 장비를 갖추고 있는 놀라운 건물 (N 센터)에 있습니다. 감독의 지지와 행정 팀의 탁월한 지원으로, 매우 재능 있고 창의적인 공동 작업자와 연구 프로젝트에서 긴밀히 협력하고 있습니다. 성균관대는 연구원으로 일하기 위한 최고의 대학 중 하나입니다. 성균관대에서 가장 즐거운 연구 프로젝트 중 하나는 여러 동료와 함께 수행 한 노이즈 나노 스펙트로 스코피를 통한 2D Van Van Waals 소재 MoS2의 결함 동력을 조사하는 데 중점을 둔 공동 프로젝트입니다. MoS2의 결함 구조는 지난 몇 년 동안 광범위하게 연구되어 왔지만 이러한 결함의 역동성은 실험적으로 사실상 알려지지 않았습니다. 이 연구는 가장 일반적인 결함 유형인 유황 결함에 초점을 맞추었고, 나노 물질 분야에 상당한 관심을 갖고, 이들 결함의 전하 상태를 해결하고 이들 결함 사이를 전환하는 최초의 실험 연구입니다.

가장 기억에 남는 행사는 우리 연구소의 여름과 겨울 학교인 듯합니다. 가장 즐거웠던 것은 무주에서의 겨울 학교입니다. 연구 분야에서 국내 및 국제 연구소의 연구에 관한 프레젠테이션을 듣는 것 외에도, 무주의 아름다운 환경에서 스키를 타기도 했으며, 가장 좋았던 점은 보다 사적인 환경에서 더 많은 동료들을 만나고, 서로를 더 잘 알게 되었다는 것입니다.

한국 생활
저는 2013년부터 한국에서 살았습니다. 한국의 생활은 약간 어려운 면이 있습니다. 매우 어려운 언어, 엄격하고, 광범위한 권위주의적 태도, 폭넓은 요구 사항, 그리고 종종 품질에 대한 스피드를 중시하는 사고방식 등이 그것입니다. 반면, 한국은 아름다운 풍경과 매력적인 문화도 갖고 있습니다. 제가 만나는 대부분의 한국인은 친절하고 매력적인 사람들이며, 저는 성균관대에서의 근무 환경에 매우 만족하고 있습니다. 한국에서의 삶에 많은 보람을 느끼고 있습니다.

젊은 연구원으로서 성균관대에서 박사 후 연구원으로 더 많은 연구 실험을 하고 싶습니다. 저는 NRF를 통한 기초 과학 연구 프로그램 (Basic Science Research Program)에서 3년간의 프로젝트를 진행하고 있습니다. 이 프로젝트는 차량 클라우드에서의 콘텐츠 전달 네트워크에 관한 것입니다. 저는 고위급 회의 및 저널에 최대한 많은 논문을 출판 할 것입니다. 아직도 기본 과학 연구 프로그램에서 프로젝트 제안이 성공적으로 수락된 때가 기억에 남습니다.

한국 생활
저는 2011년부터 박사 과정 학생이자, 박사 후 연구원으로서 한국에 머물게 되었습니다. 현재 지도 교수님과 다른 대학의 도움으로 저의 생활은 좋았습니다.

성균관대에서의 생활
성균관대의 실험실 환경은 최고라고 말하고 싶습니다. 이곳에서 대부분 학생들이 스스로를 채찍질하며, 열정과 책임감을 갖고 연구에 임하고 있다는 것을 느끼고 있습니다. 저는 분자 생물학, 생화학, 거대 분자 구조를 결정하는 생물 물리학에 대한 폭넓은 경험을 쌓았습니다. 특히, 저는 인간의 DNA 복구에 반응하는 광범위한 치료 표적의 구조적 및 기능적 특성화에 대한 연구 경험을 가지고 있습니다. X- 선 산란 기술 및 세포 신호 연구뿐만 아니라 단백질 발현, 정제 및 공학 분야의 전문 지식을 탐구하기도 했습니다. 지금은 CRISPR-Cas9 시스템과 de novo 설계 펩타이드의 구조 및 기능 연구에 중점을 두고 있습니다.

성균관대에서 기억에 남는 일
저는 성균관대를 졸업하고 지금까지 잊지 못할 추억을 많이 만들었습니다. 가장 기억에 남는 일은 저와 제 아내가 성균관대 캠퍼스에서 친구들과 잔디를 배경으로 웨딩 사진을 찍었던 것입니다. 저희는 생물 과학 건물에서 약학 건물, 연구소에서 도서관까지 웨딩드레스를 입고, 실내와 야외에서 사진을 찍으며 학교 이곳저곳을 돌아다녔습니다. 이것은 제 성균관대 인생에서 절대 잊을 수 없는 기억입니다.

한국 생활
저는 박사 과정을 밟기 위해 2015년 9월에 한국에 왔습니다. 실험실에서 열심히 일하는 시간을 제외하고, 저는 한국에서 제 인생을 즐겼습니다. 저는 아내와 함께 한국을 여행했고, 많은 추억과 사진을 가지고 있습니다. 운 좋게도, 저는 놀랍도록 멋진 한국 연구원 동료들과 친구들을 만날 수 있었고, 그들은 한국에서의 생활에 큰 도움이 되어주었습니다.

성균관대에 오기 전에 2D 자료 분야에 대한 저의 연구는 제한적이었지만 성균관대에 합류하여 최신 연구 주제의 최전선에 서게 될 기회를 얻었습니다. 이것은 더 영향력있는 연구 결과물로 이어졌을 뿐만 아니라 기술 및 과학 기술을 향상 시키는 데 도움이 되었습니다. 성균관대에서는 다양한 전자 응용 분야에 강하게 상호 연관된 재료 (VO2 나 노선 및 박막), 2차원 (2D) 재료 (그래 핀, 그래 핀 산화물, MoS2, WSe2 등)를 포함한 다양한 재료를 연구했습니다. 김길호 교수가 이끌고 있는 반도체 나노 장치 연구소는 나노 기술 분야에서 필요한 모든 필요한 제조 및 특성화 설비를 갖추고 있습니다. 연구실 창설 이래로 저는 연구실이 글로벌적 영감을 가지고 있으며, 연구원의 과학적 지도력에 전세계의 외국인과 한국 연구원의 비율이 50:50으로 유지되고 있다고 느낄 수 있습니다. 저는 한국 정부에 의해 유망한 글로벌 한국 박사 후 연구원으로 선발되기도 했습니다. 작년부터는 국가 차원의 연구에서 독립 연구비를 처음으로 받았습니다.

성균관대에서 기억에 남는 일
우리 연구실에서는 하이브리드 graphene-MoS2 장치로 작업하면서 성과를 얻었지만, 그 당시에는 그렇게 흥미롭다고 생각하지 않다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 1년 후, 그 작업은 NUS-SKKU 과학 심포지엄에서 가장 좋은 상을 수상한 것으로 평가 받았습니다. 그것은 제게 직감과 결과를 과소평가하지 말라고 가르쳐 준 기억에 남는 순간이었습니다.

한국 생활
2012년 성균관대학교에 입학한 이후, 5년 동안 한국에 살았습니다. 지금 되돌아 보면, 5년이 정말 빠르게 지나갔습니다. 나는 연구소의 우수한 전문 환경과 이민자의 다양성을 받아들이고 존중하고, 환영하는 문화 환경이 이렇게 행복한 시간을 보내도록 했던 것 같습니다. 모든 민족의 전통과 종교 의식은 존중되는 한편, 제 생각에 한국 사회는 더 큰 벤치 마크를 설정하고 과학, 문화 및 경제를 포함한 모든 분야에서 최고가 되려는 생각을 하는 듯합니다.

제가 일하고 있는 보안 연구소의 가장 좋은 점은 스트레스 없는 환경으로, 제 경험에 따르면 이러한 환경은 일반적이지는 않습니다. 연구 책임자와 건설적인 피드백을 통해 제 연구에 대해 토론하고, 이를 공유하고 구현할 수 있습니다. 또한 보안 분야의 전문가로부터 초청 강연이 정기적으로 개최되어 사이버 보안에 대한 최신 기술 동향에 대해 알 수 있습니다. 전반적으로, 저희 연구실은 연구에 매우 도움이 되는 환경을 가지고 있으며 아마도 이것이 저희 연구실의 구성원들이 계속해서 증가하는 이유일 것입니다. 성균관대에서 저널과 컨퍼런스에 많은 연구 논문을 발표했습니다. 최근, 우리의 논문 '무선 동력형 인지 무선 네트워크에서의 에너지 도달 인식 임계 값'은 IEEE 기술 분야의 차량 기술에 관한 논문에서 채택되었습니다. 한편, 소프트웨어로 정의 된 네트워킹을 사용하는 DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) 공격을 완화하기 위해 제안된 프레임 워크는 IEEE BigDataService17 워크샵에서 채택되기도 했습니다. 또한 컨퍼런스 논문은 ICC'17에서 IEEE 국제 컨퍼런스에서 채택되었습니다.

성균관대에서 기억에 남았던 일은 매년 정기적으로 개최되는 봄 축제와 음악 콘서트입니다. 이러한 이벤트에서 다양한 전통 음식을 먹을 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 다른 국적의 다양한 사람들을 만나고 함께할 수 있기 때문입니다.

한국 생활
저는 2011년 3월에 한국에 왔고, 이후 약 6년 동안 한국에서 생활 해왔습니다. 박사 과정을 마친 후 한국에서 일했던 것은 저에게 좋은 경험이었습니다. 개인적으로 한국 생활에 불편함을 느끼지 못했습니다. 아마 제가 이렇게 한국에 오랫동안 사는 이유인 듯합니다.

성균관대에서의 생활
저는 글로벌 생체 공학 부서에서 감정과 인지의 관계와 근본적인 신경 매커니즘을 연구하고 있습니다. 여기에 오기로 결정한 첫 번째 이유는 연구 주제가 저에게 흥미로웠다는 것입니다. 둘째는 연구실의 최첨단 연구 시설 때문입니다. 이러한 환경은 다른 나라에서도 찾기 힘든 수준입니다. 또한, 부서에 전문 기술 지원 직원과 관리 직원이 있기 때문에 박사 후 연구원들은 연구 외에 다른 것에 신경을 쓸 필요가 없다는 점이 마음에 듭니다.

성균관대에서 기억에 남는 일
제 연구를 위해 3T MRI 스캐너를 사용했지만 스캐너의 내부를 들여다보지는 않았습니다. 몇 달 전, 저는 내부 구조를 볼 기회가 있었고, 교수님들이 구성 요소의 역할에 대한 기술적 설명을 주셨습니다. 이 경험은 정말 인상적이었습니다.

한국 생활
저는 약 3년 전에 한국에 돌아왔습니다. 저는 지금 한국으로 돌아온 제 결정에 정말 만족하고 있습니다. 저를 응원해주는 가족과 친구들과 함께 시간을 보낼 수 있다는 점이 가장 좋습니다. 그 시간들은 제 스트레스를 해소해주고 새로운 에너지를 충전해줍니다.

Life in SKKU
Our institute (CINAP) has an amazing building (N-Center) with spacious laboratories and offices, an extremely wide array of high-quality scientific apparatus, a liberal and supportive director, outstanding support from our administrative team, and very talented and creative collaborators with whom I closely work together on joint research projects. SKKU is one of the best university to work as a researcher. One of my most enjoyable research projects at SKKU has been a collaborative project focused on probing the defect dynamics of the 2D Van der Waals material MoS2 via noise nanospectroscopy that I performed together with several colleagues. The structure of defects in MoS2 has been studied extensively over the last few years, the dynamics of these defects has been virtually unexplored experimentally. This particular work focused on the most common defect type, sulfur vacancies, and it is the first experimental study that resolves the charge states of these defects and switching between them, which my colleagues and I expect to generate significant interest in the field of nanomaterials.

Memorable Episodes in SKKU
The most memorable occasions tend to be our laboratory's summer and winter schools, and the most enjoyable of these has been our winter school in Muju. Besides hearing presentations about the research in domestic and international laboratories in our field, this winter school offered the opportunity to ski in a beautiful setting, and most importantly, to get to know many of my colleagues better in a more private setting.

Life in Korea
I have lived in Korea since 2013. Life in Korea has its complexities: a very difficult language, steep hierarchies and widespread authoritarian attitudes, extensive reporting requirements, and frequently a mindset that values speed over quality. On the upside, Korea has beautiful landscapes and a fascinating culture, the vast majority of Koreans I meet are friendly and engaging people, and I have a very positive work environment at SKKU, and in sum I find life in Korea very rewarding.

Life in SKKU
As a young researcher, I would like to get more research experiment during the time working as a postdoctoral researcher at SKKU. Particularly, I am working on a 3-year project under Basic Science Research Program through NRF. The project is about content delivery networks on vehicular clouds. I am going to publish as many paper as possible in high-rank conferences and journals. I can still remember the time when my project proposal has been successfully accepted in the Basic Science Research Program. It was a memorable day.

Life in Korea
I have stayed in Korea since 2011, as a doctoral student and then a postdoctoral researcher. With the supports of my professor and other colleges, my life in Korea was fine.

Life in SKKU
I would say that is a lab environment is the best point of lab in SKKU. Herein, I feel most of students are eager to do research, promote themselves, commute well and responsibility. I gained extensive experiences in molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics relating to determine macromolecule structures. Importantly, I have significant experiences in structural and functional characterization of a broad range of therapeutic targets which responds to DNA repair in human. I have developed an expertise in protein expression, purification and engineering; X-ray scattering techniques as well as cellular signaling researches. Currently, I focus on structural and functional studies of CRISPR-Cas9 system as well as de novo designed peptide.

Memorable Episodes in SKKU
I may have many unforgettable memories in SKKU from graduated student till now. Iam not sure your question relating to research or general memories. Honestly, the most unforgettable to me is not related to scientific research. It is a memory when I and my wife had a weeding photo shoots with our friends in SKKU campus. We walked around SKKU, from Biological science building to Pharmacy building, from SAINT to SKKU's library in wedding dress, taking photos, both indoor and outdoor. That is the most unforgettable memory in SKKU's life to me.

Life in Korea
I came to Korea for PhD course in 2015 September, approximate 7 years before. Except the hard-working time in laboratory, I enjoyed my life in here; truly, I and my wife traveled around Korea and have a ton of memories and photos. Luckily, I have a lot amazingly nice Korean labmates and friends that would make my life in Korea easily.

Life in SKKU
 Before coming to SKKU, my exposure to the field of 2D materials was limited but joining SKKU give me a chance to work on the forefront of the latest research topics. This not only translated to higher impact factor research output but have also been instrumental to upgrade my technical and scientific skills. In SKKU I have worked on diverse materials including strongly correlated material (VO2 nanowires and thin-film), two-dimensional (2D) materials (like graphene, graphene-oxide, MoS2, WSe2, etc.) for various electronic applications. My current lab, Semiconductor Nano Device Laboratory, headed by Prof. Gil-Ho Kim, is fully armed with all the necessary fabrication and characterization facilities which are required to work in the field of nanotechnology. Since its inception, I can feel that the lab has a global inspiration and usually a 50-50 ratio of foreigner and Korean researcher has been maintained, where researcher from around the globe come to work under the scientific leadership of the lab head. As a result, I have been selected to the ambitious global Korean post-doc fellowship program of Korean government, KRF (Korean Research Fellowship). Besides this, I have also received my first independent research funding last year from National Research.

Memorable Episodes in SKKU
In our lab, we have got a result while working on hybrid graphene-MoS2 devices, but at that time, we thought that it is not that exciting enough. However, a year later, that work was judged for the best poster award in a local NUS-SKKU scientific symposium. That was a memorable moment for me which taught me never to underestimate your intuition and results.

Life in Korea
Since joining Sungkyunkwan University in 2012, I have lived in Korea for 5 years. If I look back now, I cannot believe how fast these 5 years have passed by. I think an excellent professional environment at the working place and a welcoming cultural environment which happily assimilate, accept and respect the diversity of immigrants makes the time fly-by. While the tradition and religious practices of all groups are respected, but my feeling is that the underlying theme of the Korean society is their quest to set a higher global benchmark and to be the best in every human endeavor including scientific, culture and economics.

Life in SKKU
The best point about my lab, i.e., Security Lab., is its stress-free environment, which is generally not a very common trend, according to my experience. I can discuss, share, and implement my research with a very constructive feed-back from the Lab's director. In addition to that, invited lectures from experts in the field of security are scheduled regularly, which enlightens us about the current state-of-the-art trends in cyber security. Overall, our lab has a very conducive environment for research and probably that's the reason why the members of our lab are keep increasing. Being at SKKU, I have published numerous research papers in high impact journal and conferences. Recently, our paper 'Energy arrival-aware detection threshold in wireless-powered cognitive radio networks' is accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. Our proposed framework for mitigating Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attack using Software-Defined Networking is accepted in IEEE BigDataService'17 Workshop. In addition, a conference paper got accepted in IEEE International Conference on Communications, ICC'17.

Memorable Episodes in SKKU
My memorable episodes at Sungkyunkwan university are the Spring festivals and musical concerts which are held regularly each year. Such events not only offer opportunities to try various traditional food, but also to socialize with people from other nationalities.

Life in Korea
I came to Korea in Mar. 2011 and since then I have been living in Korea which roughly makes around 6 years of living in Korea. It's been a great experience for me to work in Korea after completing my Ph.D. Personally, I never felt any inconvenience while living in Korea, and that is, probably, the reason I am living in Korea for that long.

Life in SKKU
I am working at department of global biomedical engineering, investigating the relationship of emotion and cognition and the underlying neural mechanism. The first reason to decide to come here is that her research topics were interesting to me. Second, the lab has cutting-edge research facilities, which I can rarely find in any other places, even in other countries. Also, I like that post-docs do not have to care about anything else but research since there are professional supporting technical staffs and administrative staffs in the department.

Memorable Episodes in SKKU
Although I use 3T MRI scanner for my research, I have never looked inside of the scanner before. A few months ago, I had a chance to look its internal structure. In addition, professors in the department gave me technical explanations regarding the roles of its components. It was very impressive to me.

Life in Korea
I came back to Korea about three years. Now I am very satisfied with my decision to come back home. It is great that I can spend time with my friends and family who are very supportive. It relieves stress and fills up my energy.
