저번 달 커버스토리 성균관대 연구자들 1편에서는 6명의 각양각색 연구자들을 만나보았다. 서로 연구하는 분야는 다 달랐지만 연구에 대한 열정 하나는 똑같았다. 이번 커버스토리에서는 또 다른 6명의 연구자들을 소개한다. 그들의 열정도 1편의 연구자들 못지않게 대단하다. 그들의 성균관대 연구실 생활은 어떤지 들어보자.

성균관대에서의 생활
제가 일하고 있는 나노 구조 물리연구소는 다른 나라와 비교해서도 사업비 규모가 가장 큰 편에 속해요. 때문에 연구소 시설도 어느 곳보다 많이 뛰어나죠. 저희 연구소의 또 다른 강점은 ‘자유로움’인데요. 연구자들은 자신이 하고 싶은 연구를 크게 터치 받지 않고 자유롭게 할 수 있어요. 제가 했던 원자력현미경을 이용한 저주파 소음 측정을 통해 알아본 MoS2의 결함 연구가 기억나네요. 이론적으로만 예측해왔던 MoS2 분자단층의 결함 역학을 실제로 관찰해보고, 특성화 할 수 있었죠. 이를 통해 MoS2의 운반체 유형을 알아낼 수 있었답니다.

특별한 일들이 기억에 남기보다는 동료들과 함께 그때그때 떠오르는 아이디어에 대해 이야기하고, 실험을 하면서 보내는 제 일상이 기억에 남는 것 같아요.

한국 생활
외국에서 생활하다 한국에 돌아온 지는 거의 3년이 지났는데요. 여느 한국 사람들과 마찬가지로 저도 평일에는 실험실에서 열심히 일하고 있습니다.

성균관대에서의 생활
저희 연구실은 이론과 실제, 두 가지 측면에서 모두 강한데요. 연구 결과를 가지고 논문을 쓰는 데서 그치지 않고, 이를 활용해서 실제로 사용할 수 있는 제품을 만들기도 해요. 제가 저희 연구실에 자부심을 느끼는 이유죠. 이처럼 이론뿐만 아니라 실제적인 측면에서도 많이 배울 수 있어서 요즘 산업계의 요구(needs)도 잘 파악할 수 있는 것 같아요. 저희 연구소는 매주 월요일, 수요일, 금요일에 지도 교수님과 연구 진행 상황에 대해서 이야기하는 시간을 가져요. 교수님은 저희가 연구에서 놓치고 있었던 것을 가르쳐주시기도 하고, 저희를 격려하고 힘을 주시기도 하죠.
제 첫 번째 논문은 무선 센서 모형에 관한 것인데요. 센서 네트워크에서 다중안테나를 이용한 전송을 알기 위한 첫 걸음이에요. 제 모형을 이용하면 7m 이상의 거리에서 무선으로 센서를 충전할 수 있는 고효율 무선 전송 시스템을 만들 수 있죠. 지금 연구에서는 64개의 안테나를 사용하고 있는데, 이를 사람들이 사용할 수 있도록 안전성을 높이려고 하고 있어요.

성균관대에서 기억에 남는 일
컨퍼런스 시연을 하기 2일 전, 갑자기 칩 하나가 고장 나 테스트 베드(새로운 기술·제품·서비스의 성능 및 효과를 시험할 수 있는 환경 혹은 시스템)가 제대로 작동하지 않아서 많이 당황했던 적이 있어요. 지도 교수님은 연구실의 다른 칩으로 깨진 칩을 교체하라고 조언해 주셨죠. 다음 날이 대통령 선거일이었는데요. 저는 연구실에서 테스트 베드를 다시 점검했어요. 아예 망가져 버린 게 아닐까 걱정했지만 다행히 다시 잘 작동해서 컨퍼런스에서 성공적으로 시연할 수 있었답니다. 지금 생각해봐도 아찔하네요.
아까 지도 교수님과 매주 월요일, 수요일, 금요일마다 연구 진행 상황에 대해서 이야기하는 시간을 갖는다고 말씀드렸는데요. 평범한 일상이지만 그래도 기억에 많이 남아요. 교수님이 직접 제 책상으로 오셔서 연구 진행 상황을 물으세요. 교수님 덕분에 연구와 관련된 새로운 것을 찾아낼 때도 있죠.

한국 생활
저는 2014년 3월부터 한국에서 생활하고 있어요. 그 때 저는 서울과학기술대학교 박사 과정을 밟고 있었죠. 2016년까지는 대학교 기숙사에서 지냈어요. 박사 과정을 마친 후에는 지금까지 고시원에 머무르고 있는데요. 보통 식사를 밖에서 해결하기 때문에 요리는 거의하지 않는 편입니다. 제가 결혼을 했는데 지금 아내는 인도네시아에 있어서 자주 보지는 못하고 있어요. 그래서 한 학기에 한 번씩 시간이 날 때마다 아내를 만나기 위해 인도네시아에 꼭 간답니다.

성균관대 나노과학기술연구소에 들어온 건 제 인생에 있어서 최고의 선택이 아니었나 싶어요. 동료들은 모두들 정말 친절하고 협조적이에요. 동시에 탁월한 실력도 갖추고 있죠. 이런 동료들과 함께해서 감사해하고 있어요. 또, 황혜연 교수님의 지도 덕분에 연구가 더 잘 진행되고 있죠.

성균관대에서 기억에 남는 일
특별한 에피소드가 기억에 남지는 않는 것 같고, 그냥 이 연구소에 들어온 자체가 가장 기억에 남는 일이 아닌가 싶어요.

한국 생활
한국 사람들이 예의가 발라서 그런지 한국에서의 삶은 매우 즐거워요. 자연스럽게 한국도 더 좋아졌고요. 연구원 계약 1년 중 벌써 6개월이 지났는데요. 시간이 빨리 지나가는 것 같아서 많이 아쉬워요. 한국에서 더 오랫동안 머물고 싶은 마음입니다.

저는 이론 응집물질 물리학을 연구하고 있어요. 성균관대의 좋은 연구 환경 덕분에 연구가 잘 진행되고 있답니다. 동료들과 그때그때 떠오르는 아이디어를 나누고, 토론하고, 실험하며 함께 시간은 제게 큰 힘이 되고 있죠. 지금 저희는 국제논문을 저술하고 있답니다.

제 고향에는 눈이 내리지 않아서 그런지 한국의 눈 내리는 겨울이 가장 기억에 남네요.

한국 생활
저는 1년 5개월 동안 한국에 머물고 있는데요. 한국에서의 생활환경과 근무 환경은 아주 만족스러워서 생활하는 데에 있어서 큰 어려움을 느끼고 있지 않아요.

제가 일하고 있는 네트워킹 연구소는 연구 방향에 있어서 다양성을 존중해줘요. 제가 저희 연구소를 좋아하는 이유죠. 서로 다른 국적의, 또 서로 다른 대학의 다양한 연구원과 일하고 있어요. 제 연구 분야는 무선 네트워킹, 네트워크 보안, 수학적 모델링, 알고리즘 설계 및 분석인데요. 다양한 사람들과 함께해서 연구가 더 잘 진행되고 있는 것 같아요. 그래서 그런지 성균관대에서만 40개가 넘는 논문들을 발표했답니다. 많은 컨퍼런스에 참여하기도 했고요. 그 결과, 국립 연구 재단에서 독립연구비를 지원 받게 되었죠.

성균관대에서 기억에 남는 일
저와 5년 동안 연구소에서 같이 일했던 두 명의 베트남 학생들이 작년에 졸업했어요. 졸업식 날, 그 친구들의 가족 분들이 베트남에서 오셨는데 오랫동안 못 봐서 그런지 서로 매우 애틋했답니다. 그 순간은 정말 감동적이었어요. 지금까지도 기억에 생생히 남아있으니까요. 가족의 사랑은 정말 대단한 것 같아요.

한국 생활
저는 2000년에 한국에 처음 왔는데요. 2002년까지는 성균관대의 VADA 연구소(모바일 시스템 온 칩 설계 및 자동화 연구실)에서 방문 연구원으로 일했죠. 2007년에 지금 일하고 있는 네트워킹 연구소에 들어오게 되었답니다. 한국 생활은 처음이라 초기에는 적응하는 데 조금 힘들었어요. 그래도 지금은 적응도 했고, 즐거운 일들이 많이 있어서 한국 생활을 잘 즐기고 있답니다.

성균관대에서의 생활
저희 연구소는 드노보 단백질 설계와 합성 기술에 뛰어난 한국에서 몇 안 되는 실험실 중 하나에요. 제가 이 연구소에 들어오게 된 이유죠. 그렇다고 저희 연구소가 단백질 합성만 잘하는 것은 아니에요. 단백질 설계를 다양한 치료에 활용할 수 있도록 하는 연구에서도 두각을 나타내고 있죠. 저는 단일 세포와 단일 분자를 분석하고 연구해왔는데요. 이 연구소에 들어오고 나서 더 많은 성과를 이뤄낼 수 있었답니다. 앞으로는 단백질 분야에 강한 저희 연구소와 힘을 합쳐서 면역 세포 활성화와 수용체-리간드 검출의 분자 구조를 연구하고 싶네요.

성균관대에서 기억에 남는 일
연구소 신입생 때, MT 갔었던 것이 가장 기억에 남네요. 제가 외국에서 대학생활을 보내서 한국의 MT가 많이 궁금했죠. 가평에 가서 야외 레크리에이션도 하고, 술도 마시고 바비큐 파티도 했었는데 정말 즐거웠답니다. 서로의 연구 프로젝트에 대해 이야기도 해보면서 연구소 사람들과 더 친해질 수 있었어요. 아주 좋았던 시간이었죠.

한국 생활
저는 한국에서 태어나서 고등학교 때까지는 한국에서 살았는데요. 대학 생활은 미국에서 하게 됐어요. 텍사스 주 휴스턴에 있는 라이스 대학교에서 학부 과정과 대학원 과정을 밟으면서 거의 9년 동안 머물렀죠. 2016년 10월에 포닥(Post doc)으로 다시 한국에 들어오게 됐는데요. 오랫동안 외국 생활을 해서 한국 생활을 많이 그리워했어요. 고등학교 졸업을 하고 바로 한국을 떠난 터라 성인으로서 잘 놀지도 못 했고요. 그래서 지금은 한국에서의 삶을 아주 잘 즐기고 있답니다.

Life in SKKU
With CINAP being an IBS (Institute for Basic Science) center, it is one of the most-well funded research institute in the world. The infrastructure and the resources provide a very enabling research environment. Another strength of CINAP is that the freedom that the researchers enjoy to pursue their interest. The project that was probably the most interesting to me was the study of defect ionization in monolayer MoS2 characterized by low-frequency noise measurement in combination with atomic force microscopy. We were able to observe and characterize the defect dynamics in monolayer MoS2, which has only been theoretically predicted; providing a plausible explanation for an outstanding question regarding the carrier type of monolayer MoS2.

I think the time I spent talking about wild ideas, discussing interpretations, and doing experiments together with colleagues is the most memorable to me.

Life in Korea
It has been almost three years since I graduated and came back to Korea. I would imagine my life here is not too different from others; mostly being in the lab during weekdays.

Life in SKKU
Our lab has the best framework to do research in academic and practical ways. Both are covered, that I always proud can be joint in this research lab. The outcome of research is not only a paper but it build real things that will be useful for humanity and give me lot of experience and opportunity if industry will our research results. I just think that if everybody join this lab if they graduate from this lab, they wilused l gaining lot of practical/experience things with strong theoretical background that really need in industry nowadays. Also, my professor askes our progress (every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). He gives us the best method of teaching how to learn and encourage us to learn new thing related with research very well. Finally I can publish my first paper about wireless power sensor modelling. This publishing is just one step to realize our massive antenna wireless power transfer for sensor networks. Using our model in my paper, we can develop highly efficient wireless power transfer system that can charge sensor wirelessly more than 7 meter. That is the second achievement that I got. For now, our research testbed already have 64 antenna, then the next goal is how to make our system safety for human.

Memorable Episodes in SKKU
The best memorable thing I remember was, when there was a time 2 days before we should show off real demonstration to conference, my supervisor give me task to test the research testbed, but suddenly one chip is broken, and the testbed didn’t work. My professor give us an advice to replace broken chip using another chip from lab inventory. Tomorrow, during South Korean election day, me, my team mates go to the lab and re-test the testbed. We just worried that the testbed didn’t work again. Glad to hear that in the afternoon our testbed was running well and demonstration run successfully at Wednesday.
The other memorable thing that I will always remember in the future was when my professor go to the desk of each lab member /student, and asking our progress (every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). My professor give us the best method of teaching how to learn and encourage us to learn new thing related with research very well (thanks to my professor).

Life in Korea
I am staying in Korea since March 2014. At that time I was PhD student from SeoulTech (Seoul National University of Science and Technology). From 2014 until 2016 I was stay at university dormitory, then after I complete my PhD course I was staying at goshiwon until now. I usually buy meals outside and rarely cook for myself. I already married, now my wife was stay in Indonesia, sometimes (per once semester) I went to Indonesia to meet my wife.

Life in SKKU
Joining here in this lab, SAINT, is itself is my greatest memorable thing. It's really nice. We are all very friendly, cooperative and also competitive at the same time. A very healthy environment under the guidance of Prof. Euyheon Hwang. Life in Korea is very nice and enjoyable as well. People here are quite polite as well. I really like Korea very much and for a given opportunity I want to stay here some more time.

I'm working in theoretical condensed matter physics. The Living and working environments of SKKU are excellent. Friendly environment with useful discussions makes it even more better. I like the wide diversity and dynamism in research directions at Networking Lab. Working with researchers from different countries and graduating from different universities creates a good opportunity for productive collaborative research. During my work at SKKU, I've published over 40 papers in international journals and referred conferences. My current research interests include wireless networking, network security, mathematical modelling, design and analysis of algorithms. Besides this, I have received my independent research funding last year from National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea.

After two Vietnamese students from our lab, with whom I worked for 5 years, graduated last year and received their doctoral degrees, I met their families who came from Vietnam to celebrate this event. It was a touching and memorable moment.

Life in Korea
I first visited Korea from 2000-2002, where I worked as a visiting researcher in SKKU’s VADA Lab. In 2007, I joined Networking Lab, where I have been ever since. Life in Korea is different in many ways from life in my home country, but I’ve found many things here that make my stay comfortable and enjoyable, in both my professional and personal life.

The research theme of our lab was the most important factor that draw me to this lab. Our lab is one of the few labs in Korea that boast the techniques and facilities for de novo protein design and synthesis. However, our lab's strength is not limited to just protein synthesis as we are actively developing projects that will translate our unique protein design to design and development of improved therapeutics and diagnostic strategies. I would like to combine my experiences in single cell and single molecule analysis with our lab's strength in protein research to investigate and shed light on the cellular processes of immune cell activation and molecular mechanisms of receptor-ligand detection. Since I joined this lab, I made a significant progress in molecular cloning and microscopy in preparation for actual single molecule experiment.

Memorable Episodes in SKKU
As a new member of my lab, I went to membership training (MT) with my lab's graduate students and fellow researchers, and MT was a really exciting and fun experience. We went to Ga-Pyong, enjoyed many outdoor recreations, and had a really nice party with nice Korean BBQ and good drinks. It was a definitely perfect opportunity to get to know other lab members and discuss about each other's research projects.

Life in Korea
I was born in Korea and had lived here until my high school years. I moved to US when I went to undergraduate at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and stayed in US for next 9 years to complete my undergraduate and graduate studies. I came back to Korea in October 2016 as a postdoctoral researcher. After almost a decade of living abroad, I really enjoy my current life here in Korea. Since I left Korea right after high school, I did not have chance to enjoy Korean life as an adult. If I have to choose the single best thing in my life here, it would definitely be that Korean food and various cultural entertainments.
