쑥딥 싱(Sukhdeep Singh)학우는 24살로 전자전기컴퓨터공학과에 재학 중이다. 그는 인도 펀자브(Punjab) 주에 있는 바틴다(Bathinda)에서 온 박사과정생이다. 현재 우리 학교 인도연합의 대표로서 우리 학교에 재학 중인 인도인 학생들의 학교생활을 돕고 있다. 힘든 한국생활 중에서도 인도인들을 돕고 있는 쑥딥 학우, 그가 누군지 자세히 알아보자.

 그는 인도 바틴다에서 태어나 화학기술자인 아버지 밑에서 자랐다. 인도에서 지내던 그의 어린 시절은 어땠을까? 그는 어릴 때 식민지 정부 근처에서 살았다. “저는 인도의 좋은 학교인 세인트 사비에르 학교(St. Xavier's School)를 다녔어요. 공부하지 않을 때는 음악밴드에서 드럼을 쳤고 인도의 여러 대학교와 제가 다니던 학교가 주최했던 다양한 행사에서 지역전통 춤인 방그라(Bhangra)를 추기도 했어요. 대학생 때는 수영대회에 대표로 나가기도 했어요.”

한국에서 살아 보니 인도와 다른점이 많았다. “ 한국의 날씨는 인도만큼 덥지 않아요. 인도에서는 여름에 기온이 50도까지 올라요. 그렇지만 겨울은 달라요. 제가 살던 지역의 겨울은 한국의 겨울만큼 춥지는 않거든요. 한국의 겨울은 너무 추워요. 인도와 한국의 음식은 완전히 다르지만 한국의 닭갈비는 정말 좋아해요. 한국에 와서 여태까지 만난 한국인들이 친절하고 정직해서 저는 한국인들과 어울려 노는 것이 좋아요. 그렇지만 한국문화는 인도문화랑 비슷한 점이 많아요.”

  한국에 온 지 2년이 됐다. 어떤 계기로 한국에 오게 됐을까? “저는 지금 4G LTE, LTE-A 네트워크와 관련된 모바일 회사에서 일하고 있어요. 한국은 네트워킹 연구와 발명의 중심지에요. 저를 지도해주시는 나브라티 섹서나(Navrati Saxena)교수님과 아비쉑 로이(Abhishek Roy)교수님은 네트워크 지역에 대해서 정말 많은 지식과 경험을 갖고 계세요. 그 분들 밑에서 박사 과정을 밟기 위해서 한국에 오기로 결정했어요.” 한국에 처음 왔을 때 한국에서 지내고 있던 인도인 친구들의 도움을 받아 쉽게 한국생활에 적응할 수 있었다. 그는 한국에 처음 도착했을 때 특별한 경험을 했다. “제가 인천공항에 도착해 컨베이어 벨트에서 제 수화물을 찾고 있었어요. 어머니께서 너무 많은 것들을 넣어주셔서 짐이 정말 많고 무거웠어요. 그 때 갑자기 한국인 남녀가 본인들 짐을 둔 채 제 짐을 옮겨줬어요. 저는 정말 감동받았어요. 덕분에 한국과 한국인에 대해서 긍정적인 인상을 갖게됐어요.”

 한국에 긍정적인 느낌을 가졌던 그이지만 그에게도 한국생활의 불편함은 있었다. “무엇보다 언어가 가장 불편하고 어려운 것 같아요. 한국에서 직업을 구할 때 외국인들은 한국어를 잘해야 해요. 그렇지 않으면 여기서 살아남기 힘들어요.” 그렇지만 그는 그만의 방식으로 한국을 즐기고 있다. “저는 부산에 두 번 가봤어요. 매년 Holi라 불리는 인도의 큰 행사를 기념하기 위해서 천 명 정도의 사람들이 3월에 해운대에 모여요. 저 또한 부산에서 많은 걸 즐겼어요.”

  그는 나브라티 섹서나 교수님의 지도 하에 박사학위를 취득하기 위해 우리 학교에 왔다. 그렇다면 그가 전자전기컴퓨터공학을 선택한 이유는 무엇일까? “제가 인도에서 학사과정을 밟고 있을 때 저는 컴퓨터공학분야에 큰 관심을 가졌어요. 오늘날에는 컴퓨터공학이 모든 분야에서 큰 비중을 차지하고 있죠. 제가 2008년에 이 분야에 관심을 가진 뒤부터 컴퓨터공학은 제 열정과 다름없어요. 그래서 전자전기컴퓨터공학과를 선택했어요.” 그는 무엇보다도 컴퓨터공학이 사람들의 생활을 변화시킬 수 있다는 점에 반했다. “만약 사람들이 하루의 일상을 면밀하게 관찰한다면 컴퓨터공학의 매력을 알 수 있을 거예요. 우리는 끝없는 도구들에 둘러 싸여있어요. 컴퓨터공학은 전 세계 사람들의 생활양식, 표준을 바꿔놨어요. 제 할아버지는 우리가 오늘날 하고 있는 것들을 불가능한 미래로 생각하셨어요. 그렇지만 우리는 지금 하고 있는 것들을 당연한 것이라 생각하죠. 우리가 지금 꿈꾸는 것들은 미래세대에서는 분명히 가능해질거에요. 이 모든 것들을 가능하게 만드는 것은 오직 컴퓨터공학의 발명과 연구라고 생각해요.”

  그는 자신의 전공을 살려 현재 모바일 유비쿼터스 정보 센터(Mobile Ubiquitous ​Systems Information Centre, MUSIC)에서 일하고 있다. “MUSIC은 모바일 라디오 네트워크와 관련된 기술들을 다뤄요. 4G,5G 네트워크와 모바일비디오, IoT(Intra-office Trunk, 동일 교환기에 수용되는 가입자 상호 간을 접속하는 장치로 자국 내 트렁크라 부름), M2M(Machine to Machine, 기계와 기계간에 이루어지는 통신), D2D(Device to Device, 주로 모바일 기기를 대상으로 근거리에 있는 기기들끼리 직접 통신할 수 있는 기술), Smart Grids(전력 공급자와 소비자가 양방향으로 실시간 정보를 교환함으로써 에너지 효율을 최적화하는 차세대 지능형 전력망), 소셜 네트워크, Cloud service(각종 자료를 외부 클라우드 서버에 저장한 뒤 다운로드받는 서비스) 등을 포함하죠. MUSIC의 지도자가 바로 제 지도교수 나브라티 교수님이세요. 교수님께서 제 연구의 전 과정을 지도해주고 계시죠. 교수님은 연구실에서 가능한 모든 연구기기들을 저희에게 제공해주세요. 지금 7명이 교수님 밑에서 박사과정을 밟고 있고, 3명은 석사과정, 또 다른 3명은 인턴으로 일하고 있어요. 이들은 말레이시아, 싱가포르, 인도, 파키스탄, 사우디아라비아에서 왔어요.” 그렇다면 그는 MUSIC에서 어떤 역할을 맡고 있을까? “제 교수님이 연구실 학생들을 관리하는 MUSIC의 연구팀장 역할을 제게 맡겨주셨어요. 연구 환경을 관리하고 다른 학생들의 연구를 도와주는 역할을 하고 있어요.”

  그는 우리 학교에 재학 중인 인도 학생들을 대표해서 국제교류팀의 도움을 받아 인도연합을 설립했다. 이 연합은 우리 학교의 인도 학생들을 위한 연합이다. 석, 박사 학위를 취득 중인 학생들과 교수들을 포함하여 약 70명의 인도인이 인도연합에 가입돼있다. 인도연합은 매년 인도인들을 하나로 묶어주는 4~5개의 행사를 개최한다. “첫 번째로 저희는 가을 학기에 우리 학교 축제가 시작되면 모든 재학생들이 인도음식을 즐길 수 있도록 인도음식 가판대를 설치해요. 두 번째로 저희는 인도의 가장 중요한 축제인 등명제(Diwali)를 준비해요. 이것은 빛의 축제라고도 알려져 있어요. 세 번째로 우리는 한국의 광복절과 같은 날인 8월 15일에 인도 독립의 날을 기념해요. 네 번째로 봄 학기에는 새로 입학한 인도 학생들과 원래 재학생들이 만나는 인도재통합 행사를 열어요. 또 작년에는 인도의 홍수피해복구를 돕기 위한 기금모음행사도 진행했어요.”

  인도연합에서 준비하는 행사들 각각에 대해 좀 더 자세히 알아보자. 먼저 인도연합은 우리학교 축제에서 인도음식을 재학생들에게 선보인다. 이를 준비하는 과정은 어땠을까? “먼저 국제교류팀에서 여러 나라의 대표들한테 학교축제에서 각각의 나라가 갖는 독특한 음식을 선보이면 좋겠다고 권유했어요. 저희 연합이 축제에 참여하는 것은 정말 좋은 일이라고 생각했어요. 축제날이 됐을 때 자원한 학생들과 준비 팀이 미리 집에서 인도음식을 요리해놔요. ‘난’같은 몇몇 음식은 그 자리에서 요리해서 내기도 하고요. 거의 10가지 종류의 인도음식을 선보였어요. 올해 축제에서도 인도 음식을 선보일 예정이에요.”

  인도연합에서 가장 야심차게 준비하는 등명제는 ‘코리아헤럴드’에 기사로 실릴 정도로 크고 유명한 축제이다. “디왈리(등명제)는 인도의 정말 중요한 축제에요. 그만큼 축제에 참여하는 인도 학생들의 기대치가 높아서 행사를 준비하는게 정말 힘들어요. 학생들이 인도에서 떨어져 살고 있는 만큼 이 축제를 최대한 크게 즐기고 싶어 하거든요. 저희는 정말 열심히 축제를 준비해요. 힘들긴 하지만 준비하는 과정이 나름 재밌어요.”

"모든 행사 때 저희는 조직위원회를 구성해요. 이 팀은 사람들이 원하는 것에 따라 대표가 결정해요. 그렇게 짜여진 준비팀은 다같이 모여서 행사를 열 방법을 구상해요. 그러고는 이메일이랑 소셜미디어 사이트를 통해 사람들을 초대해요. 거의 50명 정도의 인도학생들이 행사준비에 참여해요."

인도연합은 작년 인도에서 발생했던 거대한 홍수로 인한 피해복구를 돕기 위해 성금을 모았다. “작년에 인도북부에 위치한 카슈미르에서 거대한 홍수가 발생했어요. 저희는 도움이 필요한 사람들을 돕자는 생각을 했어요. 그 당시 인도에서는 피해복구를 담당하는 ‘Heal Kashmir'라는 조직이 생겼어요. 삼성전자에서 온 사람이 피해복구를 돕기 위해 지원금과 옷들을 ’Heal Kashmir‘에 제공했어요. 저희 연합 역시 그 분과 연락해서 겨울옷과 담요, 신발을 보내서 인도 사람들을 도왔어요.” 인도연합은 현재 다양한 행사를 개최할 뿐만 아니라 인도 학생들의 학교생활도 전반적으로 관리하고 있다. “매년 7~8명의 인도 학생들이 우리 학교에 입학해요. 저희는 학교 근처에 그 학생들의 집을 알아봐주고 전반적인 학교생활을 일러줘요. 학생들이 은행계좌를 만들고 출입국 관리사무소에 가서 등록하는 것을 도와줘요. 학교 안에서 인도학생들이 갖는 문제점을 파악하고 해결하기 위해서 노력하고 있어요.”

  Sukhdeep Singh is 24 years old, and he is majoring in Electrical and Computer Science Engineering. He is from Bathinda situated in Punjab state in India and he is a Phd research scholar in Sungkyunkwan University(SKKU). He is also President of Indian Association in Sungkyunkwan University, which is an exclusive organization for Indian students in SKKU campus. Let's know about Sukhdeep concretely.

 He was born in Bathinda situated in Punjab state. His father is a Chemical Engineer. What was his childhood like? His family used to live in government colony. "I did my schooling from one of the best schools of India, St. Xavier's School. Apart from studies, I have been playing drums for our musical band. I also performed our regional cultural dance 'Bhangra' in various festivals organized by our school and university in India. I also represented my University in various state swimming competitions."

 When he came to Korea from India, he felt many differences. "Firstly, weather of Korea is not as hot as India. Temperature reaches upto 50 degrees in summers in India. But winter is different. Winter of my hometown is not as cold like that of Korea. Korea's winter are severe. Korean and Indian food are completely different, but I really like Dakgalbi. People over here are very kind, helpful and honest as compared to India, so I like going out with Korean people. there are many similarities in Indiana and Korean culture."

  He has been in Korea for two years. what was the reason he chose to come to Korea? "​I am currently working in mobile video over 4G LTE, LTE-A networks. Korea is the hub for networking research and inventions. My guide Prof. Navrati Saxena and my co-guide Dr. Abhishek Roy has vast knowledge and experience about networking area, so I chose to pursue Phd under their guidance in Korea.​" When he first came to Korea, he settled down easily due to Indian friends who already have been in Korea. Especially, when he arrived at airport, he went through special experience. "When I arrived at Incheon airport for the first time, I was collecting my baggage from conveyer belt. It was too heavy as my mother gave lot of things. Suddenly a Korean guy and a girl left their baggage there itself and helped me to take off my luggage from the belt. I was moved with that small incident. It left a very positive impression of Korea and Koreans in my mind."

 Although he has positive mind to Korea, there is inconvenience of korean life. "​Language is the most difficult and inconvenient thing in Korea. From hanging out to taking a job in Korea, we need to have command on Korea​n language. otherwise, it's difficult to survive over here." however he enjoys Korea in his own way. "I have been to Busan two times. Thousands of people get together in March near Haeundae​ beach every year to celebrate one of the biggest festival of India, i.e. Holi. We all enjoy a lot in Busan."

  He came to SKKU for taking Phd course under guidance of one of the prominent professor of SKKU, Prof. Navrati Saxena. What was the reason he chose to learn Electrical and Computer Science Engineering? "Since I started my bachelor's degree in India, I was fascinated about Computer Science filed a lot. Computer Science has become part of every field these days. It is my passion since I came in touch with this field in 2008.​ Therefore I chose my major as Electrical and Computer Science Engineering." He was fascinated by fact that computer can change peoples' lives. "If you carefully notice your daily routine from morning till night, you will get to know the charm of Computer Science. We are surrounded by endless gadgets. It has changed the living style and standard of the people throughout the world. Our Grand fathers dreamt of some futuristic impossible things which we possess today, but nowadays we regard these things as common. What we dream of will be possible in coming generation. Making these things possible is only due to Computer Science inventions and research."

  He is now working at Mobile Ubiquitous ​Systems Information Centre(MUSIC). "MUSIC works in mobile wireless network and related technologies. It includes 4G/5G networks, mobile video over wireless, IoT, M2M, D2D, Smart Grids, Social networks, cloud services etc. Director of this Centre is my Professor, Prof. Navrati Saxena. She has been guiding me in every step of my research. She has provided us with every possible facility in the laboratory. We have 7 Phd scholars, 3 Masters & 3 interns working under Professor from Malaysia, Singapore, India, Pakistan & Saudi Arabia." Then, what role is he playing in MUSIC? "​My Professor appointed me as laboratory head of MUSIC to take care of laboratory students, environment and help them in their research."

  He setup Indian Association representing Indian students with the help of international office of SKKU. This association is for Indian students in SKKU. He is currently serving as president of Indian Association. There are about 70 Indians working in SKKU including Master students, PhD research scholars, Post doctoral fellows and Professors. Association organizes 4-5 events per year to bring all Indians together to know each other. "First, During fall session there is cultural festival in SKKU Suwon campus. Association puts up Indian food stall for all the students in SKKU to enjoy Indian food.​ Second, Association celebrates Diwali which is the most important festival of India. It's also known as festival of Light. Third, we celebrate Independence day of India which falls on the same day as Korean liberation day, 15th August. Fourth, in Spring session we conduct a re-union where all the new and old students meet each other and have fun. Last year, we have also been working to collect flood relief funds for the affected areas in India."

Let's know about each event in detail which Indian Association prepare. firstly Indian Association introduce indian foods on festival of SKKU. how was the process? "International office sent an invitation to each country representative to put up the respective country food stall in SKKU cultural night. It's pleasure of association to be part of SKKU cultural festival. Organizers and volunteers cook Indian food at their home beforehand. Some of the food items like 'NAAN' is cooked on the spot and served. Nearly about 10 Indian food items are cooked and served. We will put up this stall this year also."

  Diwali which Indian Association celebrates ambitiously is the biggest and important festival of India. 'KoreaHerald' also published article about this big festival. "Diwali is the most important and biggest festival of India.​ It is the most challenging event for association to organize because expectations of people are high. They want to enjoy their festival to the maximum possible extent as they are away from their home. Organizers have been working hard for it, but organizing such event is an enjoyable task for an association."

"For every event association organizes a team of organizers. This team is chosen by President according to the interest of the people. Organizers sit together and plan a strategy for organizing an event. People are invited through e-mails and social media websites. Nearly about 50 Indian people become part of program."

  Indian Association collected relief fund for recovering flood damage of India last year. "Last year there were heavy floods in Kashmir which is situated in Northern parts of India. Our association thought of helping the needy ones. There was an organization formed in India, 'Heal Kashmir'. A person from Samsung Electronics was helping to provide clothes and some money to that organization. Our association contacted that person and helped them by providing them winter clothes, blankets, shoes etc." This association not only organize events but also helps Indian students in SKKU campus. "​We help new Indian students joining SKKU to settle down in SKKU. Every year about 7-8 Indian students join SKKU. We help those students in finding the home nearby campus, introducing them to campus life, opening their bank accounts, getting them registered with immigration office. We also look into the problems of Indian students in SKKU."

  What is goal of him who works from MUSIC to Indian Association? "My dream after education is to work in some good company in Canada or Australia for 7-8 years. Then, I and my friend back in India have a dream to open a company​ with office in India & abroad which will work in design, animation and social media field."
