학교의 대내외 소식을 영어로 실은 ‘글로벌 뉴스레터’. 성균관대학교는 2010년부터 정기적으로 글로벌 뉴스레터를 발간하고 있다. 최근 호에 흥미로운 기사가 실렸다. 2017 가을학기에 입학한 유학생을 대상으로 한 인터뷰 기사는 놀랍게도 Anwar Othman(화학공학/고분자공학 16), Sheryl Sarmita(화학공학/고분자공학 15), Lila Calderon(영상학과 17) 세 명의 유학생이 작성한 글이다. 유학생이 바라보는 유학생의 모습은 어떨까. 이번 외국인의 성대 생활은 유학생 기자의 인터뷰 기사를 소개한다.

러시아에서 온 19살 Kozlova Annastasiia는 자연과학계열 신입생으로 2학년 때 식품생명공학을 전공할 예정이다. 지난해 8월부터 1년가량 한국에 머무른 그녀는 새로운 경험을 찾아다닌다.

그녀는 한류를 통해 한국을 처음 접했다. 한국 음악을 듣고 한국 드라마를 보면서 한국에 대한 관심이 커졌다고 한다. 2015년부터는 일 년에 한 번 씩 여행을 위해 한국을 찾았다. 안전하고 깨끗한 한국의 환경에 반해 한국에서의 생활을 사랑하게 됐다.

한 해 동안 한국어를 배운 그녀는 학업을 이어나가기 좋을 한국 대학을 탐색했고 성균관대학교를 찾았다. 여러 고려 끝에 그녀는 성균관대학교에 입학하기로 결정했다고 한다. 성균관대학교가 세계 대학 순위에서 좋은 성적을 거둔 것이 하나의 이유였다.

그녀는 성균관대학교에서의 수업을 즐긴다. 훌륭한 교수진 덕분에 차질 없이 학업에 매진할 수 있었다고 한다. 학교의 축제 또한 재미있었다고 학교생활의 소감을 밝혔다.

그녀는 앞으로 한국에서 일하며 현장에서 경험을 쌓고 싶다는 포부를 밝혔다. 기회가 된다면 대학원 진학도 하고 싶다며 미래를 고려하는 모습이다.

Kozlova Anastasiia, a 19 years old girl from Russia who have been in South Korea for a year from August 2016 searching some great experiences. She’s now a freshman in Natural Science Department at SungKyunKwan University and will be majoring in Food Science and Biotechnology in her sophomore year.

A little bit about herself, she starts to know about South Korea from what we called “Hallyu” or The Korean Wave. Listening to music and watching Korean dramas makes her more interested into Korea. She had been to Korea for traveling purposes three times, once per year since 2015. She started to loves living in Korea because of the safe and clean environment. No problem for her to walk alone at the street.

After finishing her Korean language education for a year, she found SungKyunKwan University while searching for good universities to study in Korea on the internet. After some few evaluation, she decided to enter SungKyunKwan University to pursue her degree. One of the reason she chose SungKyunKwan University is because of its high ranking in World University Rankings.

So far studying in SKKU, she enjoyed the lectures in this university. Thanks to the great professors in SKKU, studying never been a problem for her and less stress. Furthermore, the festival that was held by SKKU was fun and really good for students to have fun sometimes.

In the future, she is looking forward to have a job in Korea to gain some experience being in Korean working environment. If there is a chance for her to further her study, she also would like to do her post-graduate education but still considering it.

 Muhammad Faraq는 전자전기컴퓨터공학 박사 과정에 있다. 이번 가을 학기에 박사과정 4년의 첫 발을 내디뎠다. 파키스탄 라왈핀디 출신인 그는 한국에 오기 전 파키스탄 탁실라대학의 강사였다. 그는 현재 한국의 면면을 즐기고 있다.

고등학교 졸업 후 Faraq는 전공으로 전자전기컴퓨터공학과 토목공학을 선택할 수 있었다. 전자전기컴퓨터공학으로 학사 과정을 마친 그는 교수가 되겠다는 꿈을 가졌다. 박사과정을 위해 학교를 물색하던 중 성균관대학교에서 연구하는 그의 친구들이 학교의 연구 실적과 쾌적한 연구 환경을 소개하며 성균관대학교를 추천했다고 한다. 성균관대학교가 세계 대학 150위권에 들었다는 것도 진학의 이유였다.

Faraq는 성균관대학교에 감사인사를 전했다. 학교가 두 달간 그의 생활비를 지원했다고 한다. 그는 유학생들에게 편의를 제공하는 성균관대학교에 크게 감동했다. 학교의 배려가 그의 꿈에 큰 동기가 되었다고 한다. 그는 학교 기숙사의 오픈 키친에도 만족하는 모습이다. Faraq는 이슬람교지만 한국에서 할랄 음식을 찾기란 쉽지 않다. 기숙사의 오픈 키친은 그가 마음껏 요리할 수 있는 장소가 되었다.

Mr. Muhammad Faraq is an Islamic Pakistani from Rawalpindi and is currently pursuing his PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering at SungKyunKwan University Natural Science Campus which is located in Suwon, Korea. He has just started his 4 years PhD this fall semester and is currently enjoying every bits of Korea pretty well. Before this, he was a lecturer in his home country in a university called the University of Engineering and Technology in Taxila, Pakistan.

Muhammad Faraq was given a choice to choose either Electrical & Computer Engineering or Civil Engineering after high school and he chose Electrical & Computer Engineering thus went on and got a Bachelor’s degree of it and now decided that he wants to fulfill his dream of becoming a Professor. So he got in touch with some of his friends and ask for recommendations of university to do his PhD. And some of them responded by recommending SungKyunKwan University to him. He went on and did some googling on SKKU and found out that SKKU ranked among the top 150 throughout the world. Another one of the many reasons why Faraq chose SKKU is because of its outstanding researches and its comfortable environment that he got to know about from his friends who are doing their studies over here as well.

Muhammad Faraq wishes to express his gratitude towards SKKU because they had generously provided two months of living expenses to him. He was deeply touched that the university shows a lot of concerns to their international students and this has served as a motivation towards him to achieve his dream even more. Another one thing that Muhammad Faraq enjoys about SKKU is the open kitchen provided in the dormitory. Being a Muslim himself, it is quite challenging to find Halal food everywhere, so with this open kitchen he could constantly cook and prepare food for himself.

헝가리에서 온 Ispan Melinda는 신문방송학 석사 과정을 밟고 있다. 다음은 그녀와의 인터뷰다.

Q : 성균관대학교에서 공부하게 된 계기?

A : 성균관대학교는 잘 알려진 대학이잖아요. 다양한 전공이 있어서 좋았어요. 성균관대학교를 견학했을 때 도서관과 같은 캠퍼스 시설과 환경도 마음에 들었어요. 훌륭한 교수님들의 수업을 들을 수 있어 감사하게 생각합니다.

Q : 가지고 있는 꿈, 목표?

A : 한국에서 한국어를 배우는 것이 목표였어요. 아직 개선해야 할 점이 많아요. 한국어를 최대한 잘 하고 싶어요. 새로운 목표도 찾고 있어요. 석사 공부를 하며 새로운 목표를 찾았으면 해요.

Q : 한국의 성균관대학교에 머무는 소감?

A : 한국은 역사가 긴 나라고 짧은 시간에 많은 발전을 이뤘다는 것을 알았어요. 현대와 전통이 공존하는 모습과 세계화에 따라 변하는 사람들의 모습이 좋아요. 성균관대학교는 제가 학사 공부를 했던 헝가리의 대학과 완전히 달라요. 그 다름이 정말 좋아요.

Q : 성균관대학교의 좋은 점?

A : 캠퍼스가 정말 멋져요. 도서관도 좋고 수업의 방식에도 만족해요.

Q : 석사 과정에서 이루고 싶은 것?

A : 교수님들, 친구들과의 좋은 관계요. 새로운 목표도 갖고 싶어요. 앞으로 좋은 직장을 찾을 수 있었으면 해요.

Q : 성균관대학교를 졸업하고 한국에서 또는 고향에서 하고 싶은 일?

A : 졸업 후 고향으로 돌아갈 예정이지만 양국 사이에서 문화 혹은 저널리즘과 관련된 일을 하고 싶어요.

Q : 인생의 새로운 단계인 유학생활을 어떻게 적응하고 있는지?

A : 저는 성균관대학교에 온지 두 달밖에 안된 신입생이에요. 교수님의 기대치를 모르니 중간고사가 두려워요. 그래도 학교에 나름 잘 적응하고 있다고 느껴요. 모두 그렇듯 처음에는 어려움을 겪었어요. 그래도 유학 경험이 있어서 유학 생활에서 어떤 종류의 어려움이 닥칠지, 어떤 다툼을 피해야하는지 알고 있어요. 빨리 적응하기 위해 노력했어요.

Q : 교수들, 친구들과의 관계는 어떤지?

A : 신문방송학과에서는 영어와 한국어로 수업을 들어요. 중국인 친구들, 혹은 다른 나라의 유학생들이 많아요. 좋은 관계를 유지하려고 노력하고 있어요. 그들과 많이 이어져있다고 느껴요.

Q: What motivates you to study at SKKU, Korea? 

A: Why I chose SKKU the first thing was because is a well-known university and offers a large range of different major. When I came to visit the university I really like the environment and the facilities inside the campus such as the library and so on. I also appreciate the opportunity of attending to classes with good professors.

Q: What is your dream?

A: Is a hard question because my dream used to be to come here and learn Korean language as a native speaker, still many things I have to improve because I want to speak Korean as well as I can. On the other hand I am looking for a new dream to achieve and I hope doing my master studies help me to find new goals.

Q: How do you feel staying SKKU and Korea so far?

A: Regarding the country, the most important thing I observe is that this is such an old country and in such a very short time it has developed a lot, I really like how its modernity and also the traditional values coexist and how people change through this globalization. About the university, here the campus is totally different from where I used to study my undergraduate degree in Hungary and is the most I like from this university.

Q: What is interesting for you at SKKU or Korea?

A:The campus is really nice and how the classes are given, also the library.

Q: What do you expect from your studies during your master degree?

A: I expect to find some good job opportunities for my future and having a good relationship with the professors and classmates. Also, I hope to find my new goals.

Q: After graduating and getting knowledge from SKKU. What kind of things would you like to do here in Korea and back to your country?

A: My plan for the moment is after graduation I will go back to my country but I really want to work somewhere between the two countries in the cultural area or other relations as journalism.

Q: How are you adapting to this new phase of your life?

A:I am still a freshman because I only have been here for two months and of course I am scared about midterms because I don’t know the professors’ expectations. However I think I am adapting well to this university, I like the whole atmosphere. I had some difficulties in the beginning as everyone does but I feel lucky because I have been studied abroad before so I knew what kind of difficulties will appear and what conflicts I should avoid, when I came here I tried to make everything arranged as much as I could.

Q: How is the relationship with classmates and professors?

A: My major is Journalism and mass communication, I have classes in English and Korean so due to this fact, my classmate are from all countries like Chinese, international students and also Korean Government scholars there I try to maintain a good relationship with them, of course I feel more related to KGSP and International students.
