SKKU, SKKU Alumni Association, Economics BK21 Education Research Group, and Sungkyun Nobel Prize Candidate Supporters will hold a special Sungdae Myeongnyun lecture by Nobel Laureate in Economics, professor Myron Scholes (Stanford University) from 10 A.M. at the 1st conference room of the 600th Anniversary Hall on September 7, Wednesday.

The Sungdae Myeongnyun lecture has been conducted by inviting domestic and foreign celebrities and is open to the public in order to spread the school philosophy of In-Eui-Ye-Jee (Benevolence, Righteousness, Propriety, Wisdom), and to produce a high-quality lecture that leads to students’ character development and community values education.

Professor Scholes was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for his contribution to the creation of the Black-Scholes-Merton model and for proposing an innovative model that changed the paradigm of the pricing theory of derivative financial products. The theme of this special lecture is ‘The Future of Finance’ and begins with a congratulatory speech by Chairman Joon Young Kim. After the lecture, economists from SKKU, Prof. Sunghyun Kim (Dean of the College of Economics), Prof. Young Han Kim, Prof. Robert Webb (researcher chair at Virginia University), and Prof. Jonathan Batten (Royal Institute of Technology) will participate in the discussion and Q&A session. In particular, undergraduate students participating in the course are given an opportunity to ask questions, and any member of SKKU (students, professors, staff, alumni) can participate through online Zoom.

Prof. Doo Jin Ryu of the Department of Economics, who oversaw this lecture, said, “The Nobel laureate Robert Merton visited SKKU in 2019 to discuss lectures and international cooperation. The special lecture from the Nobel laureate, which was suspended due to the Pandemic, has resumed starting with this Sungdae Myeongnyun lecture of Myron Scholes. SKKU has invited both Nobel laureates to invent the Black-Scholes-Merton model, the most famous theory in finance (Prof. Fischer Black was excluded on the principle of awarding Nobel prizes only to surviving scholars). Special lectures by overseas scholars and research cooperation will be continuously supported. In particular, SKKU students are expected to actively participate to inspire world-class research directions.”
