Korean University Online Video Lectures Viewed in 22 Countries

- ‘Educational Korean Wave’ Leaps One More Step … 52 Foreign Universities Offers 124 Korean Online Lectures
- Not only Korean Language/Koreanology but also Science of Administration, Business Administration: popular among students
“Corruption of public officials and politicians is severe. Will it be helpful if we adopt Korean Electronic Administration System?”(Eri Wahudi: Student, Faculty of Administrative Science, Universitas Indonesia)
“It is important to set up a transparent system, but it is also important for the general public to show constant attention to change the consciousness of public officials. Moreover, consistent policy is necessary set up both system and ideals.”

On Oct 12 (Fri), at an ‘Information Public Policy’ Lecture held in the multimedia lecture room of Dasan Hall of Economics, Sungkyunkwan University, a student who on the monitor installed at the front of the lecture hall asked a question in English. The Professor proposed a solution. More than 20 students including Wahudi from University of Indonesia are taking Sungkyunkwan University’s ‘Information Public Policy’ course in real time via internet, all the way from Jakarta, 5000km away. Students are granted full credits for the course.

○’Educational Korean Wave’ Spreads through Online Video Lectures
Along with the increase in number of international students in Korea and expanded export of the Korean education model, the ‘Educational Korean Wave’ is spreading with online video lectures. According to the Korea Foundation (KF) which connects domestic/international universities and supports lecture fees, this year, 52 universities from 22countries are providing 124 online video lectures from Korean Universities.
This is a striking growth in comparison to last year’s 35 courses offered in 19 foreign universities in 12 countries last year. While the average number of registered students in each course is 20, the total number of students taking the Koran online video lectures rose from last year’s 700 to 2500 students this year.
Moreover, Korean Universities supporting this system increase from 7 to 10. Along with Korea University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, SookMyung Women’s University, Ehwa Women’s University, Chung-Ang University, and Hankuk University which began implementing this system last year, Catholic University of Korea, Yonsei University and Hanyang University joined in this year.
The Korea Foundation (KF) initiated supporting the online video lecture system because despite the increased demand for Korea related studies, dispatching Professors or establishing Koreanology department overseas is difficult due to the lack of funding and available professors.
Local responses are great. The ‘Korean for Foreigner’ course offered in Kuwait University by SookMyung Women’s University has to expand two more of the same course because more than 100 students registered for the 20 students limit course.
Seoul National University Asia Center’s researcher Kim Jong Chul stated that “By allowing Korean, Chinese, and Japanese students to engage in an open discussion about the countries’ policy and corporate business environment, students can naturally learn about each country’s strength and build creativity.”
