Institute of Hybrid Culture, Publishes 『Future, Together with Metaverse?』

Study report on

What kind of feature does this new economic culture space, Metaverse, have

What positive possibilities could be discovered in this space, and moreover,

What are the risk factors ambushed in Metaverse

Institute of Hybrid Culture (Director, Philosophy Professor Lee Jong Kwan) published 『Future, Together with Metaverse?』 through the SKKU University Press. This report is a future humanities book that suggests possibilities and risks of metaverse that emerged as a new social topic along with the acceleration of transition towards Post-COVID digital generation at the humanities perspective, analyzed by Institute of Hybrid Culture researchers with Professor Lee in the lead.

Metaverse is a hot topic that collects the world’s interest ever since 2020, a year after COVID raided humanity. At first, it was only at the level where it drew vague interest by introducing this mysterious word. Still, now it overcame mere curiosity, rapidly accumulating an astronomical amount of capital and gathering expectations of the human economy and future culture.

After the 21st century, everything is proceeding rapidly. As capital concentrates on Metaverse-related stocks and the ascending is fast-paced, there will be a great transition towards Metaverse. However, whether Metaverse will become future habitation of humanity and according to this, whether our future generations should migrate to the Metaverse is still questionable.

One’s decision of where to live is a crucial matter, as it decides one’s way of life according to the spatiality of that space. The desperate problem is that we should pay attention to what kind of feature this new economic culture space, Metaverse, has, even in the middle of the transition. By doing so, our future generation will be able to discover some hopeful possibilities in their future residence where they will spend most of their life.

Metaverse has not revealed enough to be contemplated in philosophy and humanities. Nonetheless, Metaverse did not just appear out of nowhere in 2021. SKKU Institute of Hybrid Culture has already searched for Metaverse-related issues in depth for ten years. Of course, the Metaverse discussed currently is not the same as when the word ‘Metaverse’ first appeared. Still, the research and investigation power of the Institute of Hybrid Culture that has matured so far can disclose possibilities and risks inherent in Metaverse. Thus, the institute will execute this challenge.

We expect the future generation to show much interest in this future humanities book for the people-centered digital innovation and future society.
